God’s Rainbow of Promises: A 5-Day Plan for Kids With American Sign Language

DAY 1 OF 5

Day 1: When You Feel Sad, Pray and Give God Praise

Being apart from our family, losing a favorite toy, or feeling hurt or sick are things that can cause us to feel sad. Sadness is a very normal emotion. We all feel sad sometimes, but it’s awful to be sad all the time. Sadness is the opposite of joy.

The good news is that we don’t have to stay sad! God’s Word is filled with reminders of His love and encouragement. The Bible says God will wipe away every tear from our eyes. Scripture encourages us to trust God, praise Him, and be joyful even during sad times.

To have joy, we can put our hope and trust in God. And because we can trust God, we can also praise Him! The story of David is a wonderful reminder to look to God especially when we are sad. David often praised God and looked to Him for comfort whenever he felt sad.

No matter what happens in our world or to us, like David, we can have hope and comfort from our Heavenly Father. As God’s children, we understand that we will experience trouble in the world, but we do not have to stay sad!

Discuss:

What can you do to choose joy even though you’re sad?

Watch and Sign:

Watch the video and learn to sign the words ‘sad,’ ‘pray,’ and ‘praise’ in American Sign Language (ASL).

“When you feel sad, pray to God and give Him praise!”

Do you notice how the same handshape is used in the highlighted ASL signs? These connections can help you remember the action you can take with each emotion this week. Pray to God and praise Him!

Prayer:

Dear God, thank You for giving us Your Word so we can face our troubles and sadness. We praise You for the love and comfort You give us as Your children. Amen.

About this Plan

God’s Rainbow of Promises: A 5-Day Plan for Kids With American Sign Language

Inspired by the board book, God’s Rainbow of Promises, written by Deaf and hearing sisters Janet Moreno and Jennifer Fusco, this plan covers five common emotions that kids experience and teaches them to navigate these feelings with the help of Scripture and American Sign Language (ASL). Children will learn to choose positive and biblically informed ways to manage their emotions and foster practical understanding and application of God’s Word with physical reminders through ASL alliteration.
