Nearness

DAY 35 OF 62

“How good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity” (Psalm 133:1, ESV)

When we form a new relationship or friendship, one of the early thoughts that often runs through our minds is: Can I get along with this person? We might focus on the small things—they don’t follow the same football team as me… or even like football! How is this going to work? What will we talk about? Do we even have anything in common?

Relationships are formed all the time and in all kinds of places. Whether it’s welcoming someone new to your bible study, meeting a new colleague at work, or serving alongside someone at church. Over time, as our relationships with brothers and sisters in Christ grow deeper, we are reminded that what truly binds us together is not shared hobbies, personality types, or even theological alignment of every issue. We are united by something far greater: the blood of Jesus. Despite our differences—whether cultural, generational, or personal—we are called to be one in Christ, building one another up in love.

Psalm 133 shows us this beautiful unity, how good it is, how pleasant. Like oil poured out. Unity is not just about getting along; it’s a picture of God’s blessing and presence among His people. Let’s cherish the gift of unity in our Christian communities, and let’s look beyond the trivial and even the challenging differences and choose to pursue the unity we already have in Christ.

Today, ponder this: Think of a close Christian brother or sister that you’ve known for a while. How has your relationship grown over time through the unifying work of the Holy Spirit? Thank God for that gift of friendship—and ask Him to continue building unity in His church.
