David wrote this beautiful Psalm as a declaration of praise to God for His steadfast love and faithfulness. His life was marked by struggle—he was pursued by Saul, wrestled internally with sin, faced constant conflict with surrounding nations, and experienced rebellion from his own son. Yet, in the midst of all this, David assures us of God's enduring love and reminds us that God’s purposes will always prevail for His glory.
In our own circumstances, we may often find ourselves wondering, does God hear my cry? But here, David reassures us: “on the day I called, you answered me” (Psalm 138:3, ESV) and “he regards the lowly” (Psalm 138:6, ESV). These words lead us to the promise in Romans 8:28 (ESV): “for those who love God, all things work together for good, according to his purpose.”
However, we must be careful not to misread this Psalm as a promise of instant blessings, perfect health, or immediate answers to prayer. David himself acknowledges that he is “walking in the midst of trouble” (Psalm 138:7, ESV). There will be times when we face hardship—some of which we may never fully recover from. Even so, God is with us. He preserves our lives now and for eternity. The Lord will fulfill His purpose for us, and His steadfast love endures forever.
Today, ponder this: Consider how God has shown His faithfulness in your life. Write down one or two specific ways He has answered your prayers or revealed His love. Then, like David, choose to respond in praise—whether through prayer, song, or sharing your testimony with someone else.
