## Use the sword of the Spirit There is one thing we can be certain of as we walk with Christ. We will be persecuted and attacked by the devil. His sole purpose is to drag as many people away from Christ into the filth of evil and sin so that they miss out on the promises of God. The scriptures tell us as much. This is just one verse that shows we will suffer for following the ways of the Lord. > “Indeed all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted” (2 Timothy 3:12) God knows these things too, and He has provided spiritual armor and weapons to prevail against these devilish attacks. When it comes to fighting back against the devil, God gave us the greatest weapon of all. The sword of the Spirit. What is the sword of the Spirit? This is how it is described. > And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. (Ephesians 6:17) The Holy Spirit is not the sword. The sword of the Spirit is the word of God. It is the sum total of all of the written scriptures that God has placed in the Bible. The words of the Bible are the divinely inspired words of God that the Spirit uses to fight and overcome the devil. The words of God are powerful. They cut to the heart and spirit of mankind. Wielding the word of God effectively will blunt and destroy the attacks of the devil. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness for forty days and nights, He overcame every test with the same response: “It is written…” In every temptation, Jesus wielded the sword of the Spirit to destroy the arguments of the devil. Jesus knew the scripture. He was immersed in the word of God, and the Holy Spirit provided the right scripture at the right time to defeat the devil. You will note that all of the barbs of the devil discussed in this Bible plan were also shut down by the truth of the scriptures and the word of God. That is why we, too, must be immersed in God’s word to do the same as Jesus. We must study the scriptures to arm the Holy Spirit with the word that is the sword of the Spirit. Call to Action: Study and immerse yourself in God’s word, and arm the Holy Spirit with the sword that He can wield to defend you when the devil attacks. There are many more depressing flaming darts that the devil throws at Christians. This is a spiritual war that requires spiritual weaponry to attack and overcome the devil Rather than try to identify every possible barb from the devil, it is better to learn how to defend against any and every attack.
