“That Home” | Newsboys devotion When you were growing up, do you remember that one house in your neighborhood where all the kids gathered? The yard where all the kids played? No, they weren’t all invited; it was just where they all ended up. Or maybe it was your house, your yard. I bet if you took a look inside that home, you’d find it brimming with love. See, that’s the thing...kids have a great nose for sniffing out love. As parents, it’s important to build a home where kids know they are loved, safe and always welcome. In that home we knew we were safe / To be young enough to dream / To find the faith to believe / And in that home love it had no end / That’s where we learned to forgive / In that home The building blocks of every child’s faith should begin at home. Moms and Dads should set the initial example for their children, building not just a home, but a life brick by brick, stone by stone, shaping their children into the image of Christ. How do kids learn to forgive others? By watching how their parents forgive others. How do kids learn to build lasting relationships? By imitating their parents’ relationship. How do kids know what love really is? By examining the way their parents love them and love each other. The Church should certainly be reiterating what’s taught at home, but it should all start at the family-level. The good news is that when a home is built around Christ, love is going to overflow. It won’t be able to be contained within the four walls of a home. And that’s when the people will come, because they will want to be in a place where they feel secure, loved and accepted. After all, at any age, isn’t that what we all really want? To feel like we belong? Allow your love to overflow. Don’t try to hold it in. Don’t worry if you don’t have all the answers as a parent or if you feel like you don’t have it all together. God doesn’t expect perfection. He simply wants our hearts turned toward Him. Throw caution to the wind and love others recklessly. And don’t be surprised if you look out your window one day to find all the neighborhood kids playing in your yard. Written by Lindsay Williams
