Heart of a Coach

DAY 7 OF 7

## Wait On The Lord Set I took my first head-coaching job in 1982 at Hononegah High School in Rockton, Illinois. The girls basketball program had been winless for three years. I walked into an environment that was in complete and utter disarray, and there were some very difficult young people involved in the program. As we started that process, our team went through a step-by-step process and recreated the culture, the personality, and the character of our program. In our first year, we went 0-22. The following year, we won three games. The next year, we won 17 games. The next year, we won 21 and we were conference champions and we advanced to the regional state basketball tournament. In four years, we made some very significant progress, but it was difficult and required an incredible amount of patience. It’s easy to get weary and discouraged when things don’t happen immediately. We live in an instant society. We want it now. We want our hamburger in five minutes. We want our playing time now. We want our championship today. And because we’re not patient, we get weaker and we begin to lose our resolve. In Isaiah 40, the prophet reminds us that God will renew our strength when we are patient with Him and when we trust Him in everything. But trust is the key. We have to trust in our calling in order to have access to divine patience. If trust is at the core of your relationship with God, then no matter how fast or slow, or how many days, weeks, months, years or decades it takes, you’ll have to have the character and patience to wait on his eternal purposes. – Deb Patterson Go 1\.
