Calm Before (S4-E4)

DAY 3 OF 4

Rock solid trust

There are situations in life that completely shake you, moments when what once felt steady suddenly feels fragile. People you thought you could rely on step away, and the question creeps into your heart: Where is God in all of this?

Doubt often shows up right there because confusion and pain have made everything hard to understand. Yet Hebrews 11 reminds us that faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about things we cannot see. So what carries a believer when sight fails?

Psalm 77 gives two beautiful answers.

1. Look back at God’s faithfulness

In this episode, Peter says, “I trust in the God who walks on water.” Peter doesn’t understand everything, and he certainly can’t solve Thomas’s pain, but he looks back. He remembers the moments when Jesus was there for him, how He walked on water and reached out His hand to save him.

Psalm 77 models this rhythm. The writer begins with anguish and questions — but then he deliberately looks back at God’s mighty works. Remembering becomes the turning point.

How do you remember Jesus’ faithfulness?

Can you say, “Because Jesus was faithful then, I know He’ll be faithful now — even if I can’t see it yet. I trust Him.”

2. Let yourself be carried

When you’re in a season of darkness and can’t see the way forward, let yourself be carried by God’s Word. In this episode, the disciples are carried by the Psalms, the same songs God’s people have prayed for thousands of years.

When you have no words of your own, let God’s words carry you. Speak them. Sing them. Learn them by heart. Sometimes God carries you through people. Sometimes through prayer. Sometimes through worship. And often through His Word, planted deep inside.

Step into the long line of people who placed their trust in Jesus. That kind of faith is rock solid.

Reflection Questions

  • What do you do when you can’t see the way forward?
  • What prayers do you pray in those moments? Who helps you find the words?
  • Are there parts of Scripture you know by heart — words you can always pray?
  • What challenge or next step might God be placing before you today?

Prayer

Lord, when I can’t see, help me hold tightly to who You are: unshakable, steadfast, and true. Let Your Word live in me, and help me cling to it. Amen.
