DAY 16 OF 36

Throughout the Old Testament, we see references and prophecies to the coming King. Many of the Jewish people of the day knew these prophecies. Just imagine for a minute, you find out news about the coming King. Your mind would probably race and maybe picture how grand that entrance into the world might be. Like any royal birth, one probably pictures trumpets, celebrations, and a baby born in an unbelievable palace among an entire team of people whose job is to make sure this child is treated as the King that he is. However, the irony of what we read about in Luke 1 is that the birth of Jesus was anything but that. Even before His birth, we see an incredibly unlikely person at the center of one of the greatest moments in human history. Her name was Mary. She was a teenager from Nazareth. There was nothing overly special about her, she didn’t come from a wealthy or royal family, and in fact, she wasn’t even married yet.

We see in today’s passage that Mary is a faithful servant of God. I can imagine when Mary found out she was to conceive the Messiah, as a teenage girl, she probably had a rush of emotions; maybe fear, maybe anxiety, and maybe even some excitement. Despite all of that, Mary trusted in God’s plan and gave Him all of the glory, honor and praise that He deserved. We have much we can learn from Mary through her humility and faith. There’s no doubt that Mary probably had her own plan for her life. Of course, she was engaged to Joseph, and she likely had dreams and desires for what her future would look like, but God sends an angel to let Mary know that He has a different plan. Have you ever had one of those moments where God throws a wrench into your plans? This was a pretty big wrench for Mary’s plans, but she surrenders her plans to the Lord, and we see her faith on full display! Mary was faithful and favored by God. It had nothing to do with the fact that Mary had influence or power, because she didn’t. She wasn’t born in a major city at the heart of culture- she was from a small town and she wasn’t born into a wealthy family. What Mary did have in abundance was faith and trust in the Lord. Ultimately, because of those things, Mary has one of the most well-known stories in the Bible and in history itself.

When you think of legends, you might picture epic heroes, larger-than-life leaders, or people with thousands of followers and perfect highlight reels. But throughout history—and especially in the Bible—God has always chosen the unlikely, the overlooked, and the ordinary to do extraordinary things.
