Where Are You? A Theology of Suffering

DAY 4 OF 10

All Things for Good

Romans 8:28 declares:

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

This verse is easy to quote when life is good, but it is tested in the valley. God’s Word remains consistent even when our circumstances are not.

What We Know

When surrounded by pain, it’s tempting to dwell on what we don’t understand. Yet Paul reminds us to hold what we know:

  • We are deeply loved by God.
  • We are still being changed.
  • We are forgiven.
  • We are new on the inside.
  • God is with us.

These truths anchor us when everything else shakes.

All Things

Paul didn’t write from comfort. In the same chapter, he listed sufferings, weakness, calamity, persecution, and death threats.
“All things” include both good and bad. They are not all pleasant, but God can use them all. Nothing falls outside His ability to redeem.

Working Together

The phrase “work together” comes from the Greek synergo - to synergise.
It means God combines the seasons and pieces of our lives so that together they accomplish more than they could alone. One season may seem wasted, another confusing, but joined by God’s hand, they form a greater story.

Life can feel like holding a single puzzle piece that makes no sense. In time, we see how God fits that piece into His larger picture. He doesn’t erase pain, but He weaves redemption through it.

Pain Redeemed

Romans 8:28 reminds us that God works through dark days and broken hearts, not around them. Every experience can become the raw material for His good purpose.
Pain redeemed is more powerful than pain removed.
God’s specialty is bringing good from bad—light from darkness, joy from sorrow.

If we trust Him through tears, He will give us reason to laugh.
If we trust Him through pain, He will teach us to praise.
If we trust Him through grief, He will reveal the good that came through it.

A People of Hope

Faith turns victims into overcomers and suffering into testimony.
Romans 8:28 people are those who carry hope wherever they go, believing that God has never left and never stopped working all things together for good.

About this Plan

Where Are You? A Theology of Suffering

It’s a question we’ve all asked in moments of grief, confusion, or suffering. Pain is never easy - and often, God feels far away. But what if He is closer than we think? In this Bible plan, we’ll take a raw and hopeful look at faith in the midst of hardship. Together, we’ll explore a biblical “theology of pain” - discovering how God meets us in suffering, how hope can rise in darkness, and how His presence carries us when life hurts the most.
