FCA Hockey Penalty Kill

DAY 3 OF 14

Light the Lamp

“Light the Lamp” is a term used to tell someone to score a goal. In hockey, when we score a goal, the goal judge turns on a red light to signal to everyone that we scored. When we score, we are happy, we celebrate, and we want everyone to know it. However, often, when we obtain our goal of knowing Jesus Christ, we are reluctant to share it with others for fear of being persecuted, ridiculed, left out, etc. In Matthew 5:14-16, Jesus tells us: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Jesus is encouraging us to be proud of Him, to let everyone see the good work He is doing in us. God wants all the glory for the good works we do, but He can’t get it if we hide our faith and the source of our success.

Jesus also tells us in Matthew 10:32-33, “Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.” I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be disowned by Christ. Nothing anyone can do or say to me here on Earth can ever be worse than that.

In Matthew 5:11, Jesus tells us: “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.” I know it’s hard to subject ourselves to persecution, but it’s nothing compared to the persecution Jesus suffered for us. So light your lamp and display it proudly for all to see, don’t hide it, be a beacon of light that draws others closer to Christ, much the way a lighthouse leads sailors safely to harbor.

So just like you celebrate lighting of the lamp in a game, celebrate your faith and eternal victory in Christ with your teammates, friends, fans, and others. Be proud and give all the glory to God.

  • What is one way that you can share your faith this week?
  • How can you be a light on your hockey team?
  • How can you hold each other accountable?
