A Tinge of Arrogance

Following the pattern set in the first speech, after the introduction Elihu quoted Job, answered his argument, and challenged him to repent. The large central part of chapter 34 concentrates on God's attributes of justice, mercy, omniscience, and sovereignty. By and large, this is really good theology, but one wonders if his references are not veiled allusions to Job. In this regard, this friend is little different than the others. He thought Job's punishment must be from God for Job's sin.

Elihu naturally assumes himself to be among the "men of understanding" and a "wise man" (Job 34:34 ESV). The courtesy with which Elihu began his speeches has worn thin, and he has become nearly as confrontational and cruel as the other three! With friends like this, who needs enemies?

We should all remember the words of Jesus in Matthew 7:3 ESV: "Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?" And Paul instructed us all: "If anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted" (Galatians 6:1 ESV). Let's be better family and friends than Job had!
