Advent: Hope in the Waiting by Wycliffe Bible Translators

DAY 2 OF 5

Mary’s Faith, Trust and Hope

Waiting is hard. Whether it’s waiting for direction, healing or an answer to prayer, the unknown can feel overwhelming. But Advent reminds you that waiting with hope is never wasted — because God always fulfills His promises.

Mary’s story is a powerful reminder of this truth. She was young, engaged and had a future planned, when an angel appeared and told her she would give birth to the Son of God. Confused and likely overwhelmed, she asked, “How can this happen?” Yet despite the uncertainty, Mary responded in faith and said, “... I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true ...” (Luke 1:38, NLT).

When the angel showed up with that shocking news, Mary responded with faith. She didn’t know how Joseph would react. She didn’t know what her community would say. But she trusted God anyway.

Instead of resisting God’s plan, Mary embraced it. Instead of fear, she chose faith. She responded with worship: “... Oh, how my soul praises the Lord. How my spirit rejoices in God my Savior! For he took notice of his lowly servant girl, and from now on all generations will call me blessed” (Luke 1:46-48, NLT).

Mary’s worship wasn’t just a song; it was a declaration of surrender. She was one of many people waiting for God to fulfill His promises, and when He did, she couldn’t help but celebrate.

The promise of Immanuel, God with us, was being fulfilled. But Jesus didn’t come the way people expected. He wasn’t born into wealth or royalty. No, He arrived in the most humble of circumstances, fully human, experiencing life as humans do.

Jesus understands your struggles, your waiting and your longings firsthand. The name “Immanuel” encapsulates how He is not distant. He is with you and with all people in every language, in every place, in every area of the world.

Reflection:

  • Reflect on the name “Immanuel, God with us.” How does this name shape your view of Jesus and deepen your confidence in Him?
  • How has fear or uncertainty influenced your choices? When fear overwhelms you, how can Mary’s trust in God inspire your own faith?
  • We all go through different seasons and challenges in life. What are you waiting on from the Lord? How can remembering that God is with you impact the season of waiting?
