Live as Strangers in the World
Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.
1 Peter 2:11–12 ESV
In this section, Peter begins to provide practical application to the theological concepts he’s laid out so far. He begins the exhortation with the word “beloved,” reminding the readers that what they are being called to comes from a loving brother. We are reminded that we are sojourners and exiles. In the chaos and hectic nature of our lives, we tend to lose an eternal perspective. We are, as Peter says, “sojourners and exiles.” Knowing this helps us to put into practice what we are called to as believers. We live lives that are set apart because people are watching. Our consistency in character and conduct is a glorification of God to the lost. Abstain from the passions of the flesh and keep your conduct honorable.
