How to Set Goals With God

DAY 1 OF 7

Day 1: Seek God’s Vision

In the world we live in, results are often tied to performance. Yet God’s vision surpasses human standards. Instead of striving for mediocrity, we long for God to shape and mold us as clay on a potter’s wheel. This longing pushes us to seek His divine plan, which promises hope and a future. To begin with, this understanding is critical.

But let’s be clear—the book of Jeremiah has nothing to do with setting goals in life. What we see in Jeremiah is God’s intentionality to declare his power and authority over His people. The call of Jeremiah is to speak what he sees—to cast a vision as guided by God. His ministry is a speaking ministry that requires him to cast vision as instructed by God. And this is where we draw inspiration for a framework for setting goals with God.

Jeremiah is a book of prophecy in which God brings judgment upon wicked nations. In the midst of exile, he wrote to the Jews in Babylon. They had been forcibly removed from Jerusalem as part of God’s judgment for their disobedience. God spoke to the people of Judah, assuring them that His plans were for their ultimate good. Despite their current suffering, God reassured them that He had not abandoned them and that His plans were for their ultimate good. Though they faced uncertainty, God promised restoration and hope.

Divinely gifted with vision, Jeremiah reminded them that God’s plans for restoration and hope would be fulfilled, but it would happen in His timing (after 70 years of exile). It was upon Jeremiah - though a reluctant servant most times - to cast vision by verbally declaring the insights the Lord had given him to the people of Israel.

Can you speak what you see?

Do you have the confidence to seek God’s plans for what you see?

God has given you vision. When you align your vision with Him, you step away from half-hearted efforts and self-centered pursuits. What you see—if anything at all is committed to the Lord and His plans. This reminds us that God’s vision is greater than our immediate circumstances.

In setting goals, start by seeking God’s perspective and trusting that His plans for your life are filled with purpose. Remember, He has already written your story of victory.

Prayer Prompt: Lord, I see a vision for my life. Open my heart to see Your plans for that vision. Help me to trust in Your good plans even when the vision seems unclear and life feels uncertain.

Focal Point: Begin by aligning your goals with God's purpose for your life.

Main Objective: Spend time in prayer and meditation to discern God’s vision for your journey. Reflect on how your goals can honor Him and advance His kingdom.

Action Step: Write a vision statement for your life or season, asking how your goals fit into God’s broader plan.
