A 6-Day Poetic Devotional Celebrating God's Nature and Beauty

DAY 3 OF 6

And All the While a Bird Sang Out

Want to hear God in the middle of tough interactions?

Ever been with a family member or in a meeting where personalities clashed, emotions roared, and feelings were hurt? Ever sling a little mud back at the person that’s attacking you? I have.

During one such meeting while things were in full tension mode, I strangely recall hearing a bird chirping away outside the window. I thought it was an odd contrast to the tension inside. Later, as I sat peacefully in my car, I could still hear that same bird. Then, it dawned on me that perhaps the bird song was a little nudge from God, reminding me of His presence in both good and bad times.

Even when things seem out of control, disorganized, and full of tension God is present.

And All the While a Bird Sang Out

~

Angst of day and stress of night

stir within me now

a heart tied up and tensions bound

trapped I am somehow.

~

But near to me there was a sound

a sound of light and day

a sound so pure and surely there

it pushed despair away.

~

Yes, all the while a bird sang out

His song so sharp and sweet.

he never even stopped just once

his song my heart to meet.

~

His song I hear right by my side

A song both pure and free

A song put forth by grace alone

wrapped in love for me.

~

A sweeter song no one can hear

It comforts oh my soul

It is the song of Christ my love

that fills a darkened hole.

~

Song burst forth, in fullness come

When I’m both low and high

Permeate my heart right now

Both when I smile and cry.

~

Yes, all the while a bird sang out

His song so sharp and sweet

he never even stopped just once

his song my heart to meet.

Questions to Contemplate

How would you react to God intersecting the tension you sometimes face?

Will you look for the sweet sound of His presence the next time you have a tough discussion?

Would you consider stopping now to listen for His voice and heart?
