My brother and my sister-in-law really love their kids. They express this in so many ways - they provide them with healthy meals, clothing, and shelter, and they hold them when they cry. They also express their love by making them participate in household chores, so they are developing the life skills they will need later in life. It might not be the first thing I think of, but they also show their love by expressing clear boundaries and providing clear consequences if they disobey. Children need supervision and strong guidance from wise caregivers as their developing brains learn what is safe and good in this world. Failure to provide this could constitute neglectful parenting. It’s only as I’ve gotten older that I’ve realised discipline can be an expression of care when it comes from a loving caregiver.
The writer of Hebrews quotes Proverbs 3 to explain God’s parental love. Sometimes, things that feel harsh or painful to us can be an instrument in our loving Heavenly Father’s hands, helping us become more like Jesus. And, we know that Jesus is the exact imprint of his Father (Hebrews 1:3). In Matthew 23:37, it becomes so apparent that none of what Jesus has said earlier in this chapter has been for punishment’s sake. Jesus’ deepest longing is for His people to come into His care - into His heart, like a mother hen gathering her chicks. The religious leaders are no exception to this invitation. And we - even if we have been hypocrites - are also invited to hear Jesus’ words, repent, and come to Him.
Today, ponder this: Do you receive Jesus’ words of warning as an expression of His love? Where have you rebelled against the words of life He has spoken through His word? Be reassured, child - He wants you to come to Him, into a relationship with Him to receive eternal life. He is immeasurably loving and wise. Would you come near to Him and walk in His ways this week?
