Day 12: Courage in Adversity
Deuteronomy 31:6 - "Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you." (ESV)
Life is full of moments that test our resolve. Whether it's a sudden loss, an unexpected challenge, or long-term hardship, adversity can shake the ground beneath us. In times like these, fear often shows up uninvited—whispering doubts, feeding anxiety, and challenging our faith.
But God's Word speaks louder than fear. In Deuteronomy 31:6, we are given a direct command and a promise: "Be strong and courageous... for it is the Lord your God who goes with you." Strength doesn't come from your capacity to endure, but from God's unwavering presence.
Courage is not the absence of fear—it's the decision to trust God even when fear is loud. The Israelites heard these words while facing uncertainty about their future. God called them to step forward, not because the road ahead was easy, but because He would walk it with them.
You are not alone in your adversity. God hasn't stepped away from you. He goes with you into that hospital room, that difficult conversation, that financial crisis, that battle with anxiety or depression. His presence is your greatest source of strength.
This promise also means you don't have to fake strength. You can bring your weakness, fear, and questions—and still move forward in faith. God's strength fills in where yours ends. When you walk in faith through difficulty, you become a witness of God's sustaining power.
Your response to adversity doesn't need to be perfect. It just needs to be faithful. Courage is cultivated through small steps of obedience: praying even when you're discouraged, showing up when you'd rather quit, and trusting even when you can't see.
When you live with this kind of courage, others take notice. Your strength points them to something bigger—someone greater. It tells a better story anchored in a faithful God's steady love and presence.
Challenge:
Think of a current or past adversity that has shaken you. Write down one way you can respond today with faith instead of fear.
Prayer:
God, thank You for going with me through every storm. Help me to walk in courage, not because I'm strong, but because You are. Remind me today that I am never alone. Amen.
