The Compassion of Ebed-Melech
He took some old rags and worn-out clothes from there and let them down with ropes to Jeremiah in the cistern. Ebed-Melech the Cushite said to Jeremiah, “Put these old rags and worn-out clothes under your arms to pad the ropes.” (Jeremiah 38: 11–12 NIV)
By the time Ebed-Melech had got together the 30 men the king had assigned to the task of saving the prophet and arrived back at the cistern, Jeremiah must have been desperate, eking out the last ounces of his strength to keep from slipping into the suffocating ooze at the bottom of the dark pit. Realising how weak he would be, Ebed- Melech not only threw Jeremiah a lifeline, but also lowered a bundle of rags to make the rope less painful under the armpits. Little by little they lifted him out into the safety of the courtyard.
We may not be involved in a rescue mission as dramatic as Ebed-Melech’s, but opportunities to offer practical care to people in need will still arise. The gift of hospitality involves sharing what we have with others – whether that is a welcome into our actual home or through providing support in other ways. Those facing human rights violations because of their faith frequently need this kind of help. The Good Samaritan picked up the wounded traveller, tended his wounds and then arranged with a nearby inn to care for him, not expecting any recompense for his actions.
At times we all need the comfort of a friend, the gentleness of someone who cares, the reassurance that we are safe when we are assailed with fears and doubts. Like Ebed- Melech and the Good Samaritan, we can be the hands and feet of Jesus Himself.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, please fill us with Your compassion for those in need and guide us in helping them – whatever form that may take. Amen.
