The Sermon on the MountSample

False prophets
The choice to follow the narrow road is made more difficult by the presence of false prophets, whose teaching produces harmful fruit in their lives and in the lives of those who follow them. Their proposals offer an easier and more prosperous way, but they keep their followers under tight control.
False prophets already existed in Old Testament times (Jeremiah 23:16,17; Deuteronomy 13:1-5). In numerous instances, they outnumbered prophets who were loyal to the Lord.
In the New Testament, we see that problems can also arise from false teachers (2 Peter 2:1). Their appealing traits include the use of seductive language (2 Timothy 4:3,4; Romans 16:17,18; 2 Peter 2:18,19) and amazing signs and wonders (Matthew 24:24). Their teaching resembles the truth and seems harmless, but the damage is seen over time, often too late.
Fruit is an external aspect that reveals the plant's inherent nature. In the long run, the real nature of the false prophet's heart is revealed through his words and actions (Luke 6:45). Paul warned the elders in Ephesus that "savage wolves" would come in among them (Acts 20:29,30 NIV). The characteristic of false teaching is to prey on simple believers instead of trying to strengthen them in the Lord (Colossians 1:28-2:8).
Today, with the use of social media, the message of modern false prophets and teachers reaches everywhere, and seems very fascinating. But we can't really get to know the people who appear on attractive websites, social media accounts, and well-made videos, and so we don't know if there is the fruit of the Holy Spirit in their lives. There are two ways to avoid being influenced by them. First, consult the Bible, like the members of the synagogue in Berea, to see if these teachings align with all of God's counsel (Acts 17:11). Second, attend a local church where the Word of God is preached and the leaders and their lives are known, both inside and outside the church.
- Are you impressed by the way people express themselves, or do you try to verify their statements in the light of the Bible?
About this Plan

“The Sermon on the Mount” is the title often given to chapters 5-7 of the Gospel of Matthew. It is a summary of the teaching of Jesus. Although the other Gospels present some similar passages in other contexts, it is likely that Jesus actually delivered this speech on only one occasion, but then repeated the same concepts several times on other occasions as well. Matthew Henry, the great Bible commentator, says that the purpose of the Sermon on the Mount is “not to fill our heads with notions, but to guide and regulate our practice”.
