House of David, Season 2: Trusting God in the Middle of the StorySample

The Fight of Your Life
One of the beautiful things about David’s narrative is that we get not only his biography in the Old Testament, but his feelings expressed in the Psalms. Psalm 27 is such a powerful portrait of what it looks like to have faith in a God who is about His glory and giving Him all of your heart, even while you are in the middle of a very real battle.
Yes, there’s confidence expressed in the opening verse, but verse two quickly sobers the reader up to the depths of the situation. And in that place, what does David seek to do more than anything else? Commune with God.
Could it be that the biggest battle you’re facing isn’t financial, mental, relational, or even physical, but actually spiritual? Could it be that the goal of the Enemy is that you would be so downtrodden in heart by the circumstance you find yourself in that you abandon the One you were made for?
We’re not saying the battle isn’t real. We’re not saying there aren’t potential real-world, real-time consequences and fallout on the other side. But what David is saying is that the battle - whatever it may be - is not more powerful than the God who promises to hide you.
Growing up, did your mom ever hide the cookies on the top shelf? Not only where you couldn’t reach, but also where you couldn’t see? That’s what God promises to do with your heart in Psalm 27, that David pens. To hide your heart, high above your enemies. It’s a picture of protection and care. It is not a promise of a pain free life. It’s a promise there’ll always be somewhere your pain is safe. Because God is good. The fight of your life isn’t to fix your situation. The fight of your life is to wait on God.
Reflection Question: In your current battle, are you more focused on your situation—or on seeking God’s presence in the middle of it?
