MADE TO MIRROR HIM

From the opening pages of Scripture, we see how God stands apart. In contrast to the patriarchal ancient world, the Bible tells us that “God created humanity in his own image, male and female he created them” (Genesis 1:27). God crowned every woman and every man with the same dignity, a status of unparalleled worth.

The word “image” in Hebrew, tselem, describes an object that has been crafted with intention. It’s rooted in the idea of “to shade,” as in a shadow of something else. Many kings during this time had images created that resembled their appearance. God uses the term "tselem" when He speaks of creating humankind as living, breathing bearers of His image. Unlike the lifeless statues of Egyptian gods, which were merely carved representations, God created us to reflect His nature. We are meant to mirror His love, justice, mercy, and presence in the world.

God’s impartial love shapes our understanding of who we are and, more importantly, who God is. And God showed us that love from the beginning of time.

Imagine being an Israelite, hearing that you were created to be a “carved-out” reflection of God’s very image, a shadow of His love, patience, kindness, and justice. So much so that when others look at you, they will see not just a human being but a reflection of God’s character.
