Don’t Quit in the Pit

DAY 1 OF 5

The Dream Isn’t Dead

Devotional:

I used to dream as a way to escape. When life felt messy or painful, I’d imagine something better—somewhere I was more confident, more important, more in control. It helped me cope. But eventually, I realised some dreams aren’t meant to be an escape. They’re meant to shape us.

You might know what I mean. We all carry dreams—ideas about the life we hoped for. Some of them come from pressure. Some from pain. But every now and then, there’s a dream that feels different. It grabs you. It stays with you. It makes you think, Maybe there’s more to me than what I see right now.

That’s where Joseph was. He was seventeen when he had a dream from God (Genesis 37:5–11). He saw himself in a position of influence—his brothers bowing down to him, his future stretching far beyond the family farm. But instead of support, he got rejection. His brothers hated him. His father dismissed him. And Joseph ended up alone, far from anything he imagined.

But here’s the thing: the dream wasn’t wrong. It was just early. And it was real.

Sometimes we think if a dream is hard, it must not be from God. But Scripture shows the opposite. Real dreams come with real resistance. God often uses a dream to start shaping your life—not just give you a nice idea, but change who you are.

If you’ve ever had something in your heart you thought was from God, but it didn’t work out how you expected—don’t give up on it. Just because the dream is buried doesn’t mean it’s dead. God does some of His best work underground.

So let me ask: is there a dream you’ve pushed aside? Something you felt God put in your heart, but it got too hard or painful to keep believing for?

Don’t walk away from it yet. The dream isn’t over. And neither is your story.

Reflection Question:

Is there something you used to believe God could do through your life—but now you’ve let it go?

Prayer:

God, remind me of the dream You put in my heart. Help me trust You with it—even when I don’t see anything happening. I don’t want to escape my life. I want to live it on purpose. Amen.
