Devotional for Postgraduate Students

DAY 5 OF 8

Time Management Is Biblical

Time management isn’t just a productivity tip; it is a biblical principle. As a postgraduate student, your time is your most valuable and limited resource. You cannot afford to waste it.

In Ephesians 5:15-17 (NKJV), Paul tells us to “walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” We are called to faithfully steward time and not waste it.

You may have started this course without truly counting the cost, not just financially, but in terms of your energy, your emotions, and your schedule. Yet, Luke 14:28-30 teaches us the importance of counting the cost before building. Now that you’re in the thick of it, take time to reflect: What needs to be sacrificed or adjusted so that you can finish well?

Sometimes it’s not a matter of time, but of boundaries. Matthew 5:37 (NKJV) reminds us, “Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’” It is better to be honest about your current capacity than to overcommit and underdeliver.

The parable of the two sons in Matthew 21:28-32 teaches us that it is better to say ‘no ‘and later act than to say ‘yes’ and fail to follow through. Don’t say ‘yes’ out of guilt, pressure, or the fear of missing out.

Don’t fall for the trap of productive procrastination. Those moments when you suddenly feel the urge to clean, rearrange furniture, or clear out your inbox instead of writing that paragraph. We have all been there!

Proverbs 24:33-34 (ESV) warns, “A little sleep, a little slumber… and poverty will come upon you like a robber.” In the context of your degree, procrastination is the thief of progress. Make a plan. Set a schedule. Even one focused, undistracted hour a day can bear much fruit, especially if you’re working full-time alongside your studies.

James 4:13-16 (NIV) reminds us not to be presumptuous with our time. “You do not even know what will happen tomorrow...” So steward today with wisdom.

Finally, 1 Corinthians 6:12 (AMP) soberingly reminds us that just because you can do something does not mean that you should. “All things are permissible, but not all things are beneficial.” That something is permissible doesn’t mean it’s purposeful for this season.

Here are some practical time-management tips:

  • Build a study timetable.
  • Identify distractions and put boundaries in place.
  • Use your “yes” and “no” with prayerful discernment.
  • Invite the Holy Spirit to highlight hidden areas of procrastination or misplaced priorities.

When faced with an additional task, ask yourself:

  • Is God asking me to do this now or later?
  • Do I realistically have the capacity?
  • Am I being moved by people-pleasing, self-pleasing, or purpose?
