Fear Not! A Guide to Living a Fearless Life

DAY 19 OF 30

Need to Detox?

“’And we have brought down other money in our hands to buy food. We do not know who put our money in our sacks.’ But he said, ‘Peace be with you, do not be afraid. Your God and the God of your father has given you treasure in your sacks; I had your money.’ Then he brought Simeon out to them” (Genesis 43:23, NKJV).

This is the steward of Joseph’s house speaking to Joseph’s brothers. His brothers had just returned to Egypt with a double portion of money, along with their brother Benjamin, to help free Simeon, who had been imprisoned.

Joseph then orchestrated a series of events to have it look like Benjamin had stolen an important silver cup from Joseph’s home. Joseph sent his steward after his brothers as they were returning to Canaan. When the cup was found in Benjamin’s bag, the men were brought back to Joseph. Judah said to Joseph, “God has found out the iniquity of your servants; here we are, my lord's slaves, both we and he also with whom the cup was found" (Genesis 44:16, NKJV).

These men believed the lie they had carried around with them all those years about Joseph’s death had finally caught up with them. Joseph was seventeen years old when sold into slavery, and now he was at least thirty-seven years old. Joseph’s brothers had carried this lie around with them for at least twenty years.

Lies are toxic poison; they rot you from the inside out. Satan is known as the father of lies, and he loves to see that lie (sin) eat away at you. The only way to detox a lie is to come clean; purge it out of your system, regardless of how painful that will be. God has a surefire detox system for lies, and it’s called confession. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9, NIV).

James takes the confession one step further: “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed” (James 5:16, NIV). We must first confess our sin to God, but the real healing therapy comes from confessing the sin to man. Our confession to man gets the sin out in the open, where Satan can no longer use it against us. If you are carrying around a lie, you cannot live fearlessly because you are always in fear that someone will find out.

Is there some burden you’ve been carrying around that needs to be confessed? Confession is not only good for the soul, but it is a great weight loss program. Once you confess the sin, your load gets much lighter. As Jesus said, “The truth will set you free” (John 8:32, NIV).

Prayer: Holy Spirit, I pray you will bring every unconfessed sin in my life to light. Reveal any issues I have not adequately addressed so I can confess them, and render the attacks of the enemy harmless. I am tired of being held hostage by the enemy. Thank You, Jesus, that the truth has set me free. In Jesus name, amen.
