The Power of Generosity: Sharing God’s AbundanceSample

During Hard Times
During the COVID-19 lockdown, opportunities abounded to extend generosity through humble service. Not only did generous neighbors of ours practice responsible social distancing by suspending the services of the couple who cleaned their house, but they also still paid them over the nine-month period that they were unable to work. What a beautiful way to show thanksgiving and generous love by supporting those who are unable to work because of the service nature of their profession.
Paul understood the principle of being grateful for God’s incredible blessings in Christ and, out of that overflow of gratitude, of expressing generosity in tangible ways. Paul’s desire to refresh the hearts of others with kindness was even more evident in his time of trials and imprisonment. Even in difficulty he experienced the fruit of joy and comfort that flows from a love seeking to serve (Philemon vv. 6–7).
This attitude of gratitude to the Lord for his unspeakable gifts compels us to love out loud. Gratitude to God is an incubator for generosity to God’s people. Yes, Jesus refreshes us so that then we are able to refresh others.
In the middle of the COVID-19 monotony, it was so very encouraging to hear the stories of generosity fueled by gratitude and love for people in need around our beloved country. People shared stories of positivity. Teachers paraded their cars through their students’ neighborhoods in loving solidarity and care for their community. A crisis brings out the best and the worst in individuals and societies. It was good to see good and generous people serving their neighbors.
During the divinely orchestrated pause the pandemic caused for most of the world, many took the time to be grateful for God’s blessings. Some wrote out a gratitude list and read it aloud at mealtimes. Others called or texted friends to check on them and thank them for being significant people in their lives. Fun grandparents video chatted with their grandchildren and read them stories.
Even during difficult times, God gives us more grace so that we can give more grace. The Lord will use your generosity to illustrate the best gift of his Son, Jesus, for the world to trust (Psalm 40:3). Praise to God brings out angels of generosity in God’s economy.
Lord, give me a grateful heart that remains generous even in hard times. Help me give selflessly, trusting in your provision and reflecting your love to others. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
