How Does Faith in God Affect Our Emotions?Sample

We do not need to hide or suppress our emotions
“I am weary with my moaning; every night I flood my bed with tears; I drench my couch with my weeping. My eye wastes away because of grief.” (Psalm 6:6-7 ESV)
The book of Psalms contains intensely personal poems and songs. These not only describe life events or theological reflections, but also a wide range of deep emotions. While some express abundant joy, others, such as the Psalm quoted here, were written when the poet’s soul was “greatly troubled” (Psalm 6:3 ESV).
I believe that the Holy Spirit guided the people writing and editing the Scriptures, so the resulting Bible is God’s Word. In fact, these Psalms with their vivid emotional outbursts are an important and indispensable part of God’s Word for us. I think this is sufficient evidence that we do not need to hide or suppress our emotions, not even the negative ones. We can freely express our anxiety, grief and anger to God.
Jesus did not shy away from His emotions either. He was open about them. In His darkest moments, He told His disciples, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death.” (Matthew 26:38 ESV) And when his friend died, Jesus grieved visibly :
“He was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. ‘Where have you laid him?’ He asked. ‘Come and see, Lord,’ they replied. Jesus wept. Then the Jews said, ‘See how He loved him!’” (John 11:33-36 ESV)
If Jesus didn’t hide His emotions, why would we? Do you freely talk about your emotions? If not, what holds you back?

About this Plan

We all experience emotions, both positive and negative. When God’s Spirit lives in us, He transforms and renews us from within. How does this impact our emotions? Should Christians experience emotions differently than non-Christians?
