The Nature of Evangelism (Part 3)
Today’s reading is a continuation of Section 4 of the Lausanne Covenant - The Nature of Evangelism. Read Here.
In issuing the gospel invitation we have no liberty to conceal the cost of discipleship. Jesus still calls all who would follow him to deny themselves, take up their cross, and identify themselves with his new community. The results of evangelism include obedience to Christ, incorporation into his Church and responsible service in the world.
The Consequences of Evangelism
Evangelism is not only about sharing the good news—it is also about encouraging a response. It is proclamation with the goal of persuasion. In the early church, persuasion was central to evangelism. Paul described his ministry in these terms (2 Corinthians 5:11), and Luke records in Acts that Paul often sought to persuade his listeners (Acts 17:1-4; 18:4; 19:8-10, 26; 28:23-24). The apostles saw no conflict between reasoning with people and trusting in the Holy Spirit, and neither should we.
This persuasion must be honest and open. The gospel invitation should never hide the cost of following Christ. Jesus himself urged would-be followers to ‘sit down first and count the cost’ (Luke 14:28). He still calls his followers to deny themselves—putting him above self—to take up their cross, and follow him even to the place of execution, and to identify themselves with his new community (Mark 8:34-38).
True conversion brings change in at least three key relationships:
- Obedience to Christ — living under his authority.
- Belonging to the church — joining the community of believers (Acts 2:40-47).
- Responsible service to the world — following the example of Christ’s service (John 13:13-15).
Conversion means nothing if it does not bring a change from self-centred living to one of sacrificial service (Mark 10:43-45). Anything less falls short of the life to which Jesus calls his disciples.
Reflection:
Have you counted the cost of following Christ—and embraced his call to sacrificial service?
Prayer:
Lord, deepen my obedience, grow my love for your Church, and shape me into a servant for your glory.
