Parenting on Point

DAY 9 OF 21

Embracing the Beauty of Rest

Rest is a gift from God, and it’s essential for our spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being. As parents, it’s easy to become overwhelmed with endless to-do lists, activities, and responsibilities. However, God invites us to find our rest in Him. Rest is not just about sleep or relaxation; it’s about finding peace and renewal in God’s presence. Children often learn their habits and rhythms from observing their parents. If they see you constantly rushing, stressed, and exhausted, they may begin to mirror that same behavior. But if they see you prioritizing rest and time with God, they will learn to value it too.

Make it a priority to set aside time for personal rest and reflection. Are you running around to a million activities (sports, dance, swim, music lessons)? Do you need to have your kids choose one activity so you can spend time as a family? We had to evaluate our sports schedule each year, and we still prioritized church as well. Show your children that it’s okay to take breaks, say no to certain activities, and prioritize time with God. Create a rhythm of rest in your home. Establish regular family times for quiet, such as reading, praying, or simply enjoying each other’s company without distractions. Encourage your children to find rest in God by teaching them to pray, read Scripture, and listen to worship music. When our kids were little, this included a lot of time outdoors—going for walks, playing at the park, or having fun at the beach.

Explain that rest is more than just a physical need—it is a spiritual discipline. Discuss the concept of the Sabbath and why it’s essential to take a break from work and activities to focus on God. Help your children understand that rest is not about laziness but about renewal and refreshment. It’s about trusting God with all our worries and concerns, knowing that He is in control. Teach them to bring their burdens to God in prayer and to trust in His promise to provide rest for their souls.

Rest is a sacred space where we encounter God’s peace and presence. It’s in these quiet moments that we hear His voice most clearly. Teach your children to value and protect their rest, knowing that it’s a precious gift from their loving Father.

Dear Lord, thank You for the gift of rest. Help me to find my rest in You and to model this to my children. Teach us to slow down, to trust in Your provision, and to embrace the peace that comes from resting in Your presence. Renew our spirits and fill us with Your strength. In Jesus' name, Amen.
