I have a dear friend who went through an ugly divorce. There was a lot of animosity and hostility from her soon-to-be ex-husband. Because he had a lot of money and other resources, it often felt that the cards were stacked against her. Many times it seemed like she was losing the battle, whether it was decisions from the courts or the lure of a father who could give her children anything they wanted.

Over time, these distinctions become clear regardless of external pressures or relationships that offer immediate gratification.
