Generosity as Our Weapon

Money. Investments. Returns. Profits. These are the idols of our age, demanding much of our time, attention, and focus. Despite our efforts to resist the allure of wealth, the pursuit of it is ingrained in us. From a young age, we are taught to study diligently to secure a better income. As adults, we are encouraged to save and invest wisely for a comfortable retirement. Everything about life seems to revolve around money, and getting more of it.

The problem is, we try to fight against this pervasive desire for wealth without any weapons. Generosity is that weapon. Jesus taught in His Sermon on the Mount, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Our focus shapes our loyalties. He warns that devotion to wealth can ultimately enslave us, becoming our false god. So, what’s the solution? Give it away! Embrace sacrificial generosity, not just to support God’s work, but to liberate ourselves from the clutches of greed and materialism. Regular tithing reminds us that all we have comes from God. However, giving beyond the tithe empowers us to combat the relentless desire for more, allowing us to find contentment in what we already possess.

Do you find your life revolving around the accumulation of wealth? This drive can disguise itself as diligence or responsible provision. Yet, beneath the surface, true satisfaction eludes you because the real target of your heart is accumulating more.

But you can fight against this in the following way: give sacrificially. Is there someone or something you can be generous toward this week? Will you take a leap of faith and give beyond your comfort zone? Try it and witness how it diminishes the power of money in your life.
