Jesus, this miracle worker and friend of the disciples, just told those with Him that they were going to the other side of the lake. I picture the disciples walking toward the docks, glad to be back on the water and to spend a bit of time off their feet after traveling so much. I picture Jesus climbing aboard the boat, walking up the wooden steps, perhaps made by his earthly father who was a carpenter. He glances at Peter, a fisherman, knowing he’ll hoist the sail and love to be in charge of steering the boat. Knowing that his friends are well equipped to sail to the other side - they were fishermen after all - Jesus settles down for a nap (see Luke 8 verse 23). Throughout the Bible, we see our Heavenly Father preparing & equipping. David, a shepherd boy, learned to sling a deadly rock at Goliath by slinging those rocks at lions and bears that tried to kill his sheep. Esther’s beauty and personality earned the admiration of everyone who saw her and earned her the love of a king, long before she was made queen and - in the end - saved the nation of Israel. As her uncle said to her, “perhaps you were made queen just for this purpose.” (See Esther 4:14). And now we see the disciples, many of whom Jesus had called to serve while they were in their fishing boats, back on the water and sailing to the other side of a lake.
