The Lighthouse in the Fog

DAY 2 OF 5

Feeling Our Way Through the Fog

“I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.” (Ecclesiastes 1:14 NIV).

Many people are like a man lost in the fog, trying to find his way home. Feeling their way, they search for something solid to hold onto. They seek meaning and direction amidst life’s confusion.

“Who am I? Where did I come from? Why am I here? Where am I going?”

These are questions that eventually arise in every human heart—hearts in which God has “planted eternity,” a hidden desire to live forever (Ecclesiastes 3:11).

A small comfort

In our daily lives, we struggle, study, and work hard to provide a better future for ourselves and our loved ones. These efforts often bring good outcomes and some comfort. Even the author of Ecclesiastes acknowledges this:

“I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God.” (Ecclesiastes 3:12-13 NIV)

“So I saw that there is nothing better for a person than to enjoy their work, because that is their lot...” (Ecclesiastes 3:22 NIV)

The ultimate dilemma

Still, a haunting truth remains: we are all going to die. What’s the meaning of such intense human experiences—love, hate, joy, sorrow—if, in the end, they lead to nothing? What happens after death? Will I live again?

Why is it so hard to accept the death of someone we love? Why does the feeling of love seem eternal? Love—the purest and most perfect of all emotions—seems to cry out that there’s something more, something beyond matter. But the fog of life doesn’t let us see what comes next.

Conclusion

We’re caught in life’s fog and smoke. Could something—or someone—offer a way out of this despair? Let’s keep searching.
