Nearness

DAY 34 OF 62

When we moved into our new office, it was a day of rejoicing. Finally, we had a building that we could make our own. We left that day feeling excited, only to have our emotions completely overturned when we found the office had been robbed overnight. Tens of thousands of dollars worth of equipment, instruments, gear, and technology were taken.

In the days that followed, we installed a top-notch security system, but persistent thieves still found a way in, and there was a lingering sense that we were never truly secure.

Proverbs 14:26-27 (NIV) invites us to know real security: “Whoever fears the Lord has a secure fortress, and for their children it will be a refuge. The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, turning a person from the snares of death.”

This kind of fear isn’t terror—it’s reverence. It’s the deep awareness that God is holy, powerful, and good, and that life makes the most sense when we live under His rule. That’s what Psalm 34:9 (NIV) echoes: “Fear the Lord, you his holy people, for those who fear him lack nothing.” The fear of the Lord offers us refuge and certainty that our mighty God will provide all we need.

This refuge isn’t just for you. It overflows generationally—your posture of reverence shapes the next generation. Think of Timothy, raised in sincere faith by his mother and grandmother (2 Timothy 1:5). That kind of legacy begins with fearing God more than anything else.

The fear of God also leads to life. Not just surviving, but thriving. As Proverbs 19:23 (NIV) declares, “The fear of the Lord leads to life; then one rests content, untouched by trouble.”

So today, let your confidence come not from security locks or plans, but from the unshakable fortress of God’s presence. That kind of fear sets you free.

Today, ponder this: What is it that you rely on for security? Surrender those things to God and ask Him to deepen your reverence and trust in Him.
