Roughly speaking, ChatGPT answers 1 billion questions per day (full disclosure: I found this out by asking ChatGPT, which felt oddly meta). Looking at this statistic, it’s clear that as we navigate life, we have a lot of questions! And at this moment in time, we have so much information readily available to us. We can type a question into a box and, in a ludicrously short amount of time, we are provided with access to centuries of accumulated learning—the insights of philosophers, historians, theologians, doctors, authors, and artists. And yet…
Despite the sheer amount of facts and data available to us, we can still feel unbelievably lost - ill-equipped in the art of living. We might know a lot of stuff, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we know what we are meant to do or how to do it. In short, we might have a deluge of data, but that doesn’t mean we have wisdom.
The passage today is the opening section of the book of Proverbs. Proverbs is a book that is offering us wisdom for life, from the Creator of life, and aims to help us make sense of life. It teaches us what wisdom is— it’s a life lived in awe of God. It’s also a practical book that provides advice on how we might live well in God’s world and make choices that are good and right.
Today, ponder this: Would you describe yourself as wise? Would you like to be wiser than you currently are? Why would a fear of the LORD be the starting point of wisdom?
