Heaven (Part 3)

DAY 3 OF 10

Where's My Wife?

Marriage is one of the most significant relationships we experience on Earth, designed by God for companionship, love, and to reflect His covenant with us. Praise God for almost 30 years with my wife, Kerrie!

It’s no wonder that the thought of what happens to marriage in Heaven stirs deep emotions and questions.

Now, before we dive in, let me confess something. If you’ve been following this series, you might’ve noticed I talked about animals in Heaven before marriage. My wife will find this hilarious, especially since she’s always telling me I have more photos of our dogs, Riley and Molly, on my phone than of her or our children.

For the record, it’s not intentional. The dogs just seem to cooperate better with the camera! But before I get myself into too much trouble, let’s get back to the serious stuff.

When the Sadducees asked Jesus about marriage in the resurrection, He gave a clear but challenging answer. He said, 'At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven' (Matthew 22:30 NIV). This can feel unsettling, especially for those of us who treasure the bonds we share with our spouses. But let’s unpack what this means.

Jesus isn’t saying that our relationships will cease to exist or that we won’t recognise and cherish those we love. In fact, Scripture suggests the opposite: Heaven will be a place of perfect love, where all relationships are deeply fulfilled. What changes is the purpose of marriage.

On Earth, marriage serves as a reflection of Jesus’ love for the Church (see Ephesians 5:25-32), but in Heaven, that reflection will no longer be needed because we’ll be fully united with Jesus Himself.

Will we also know our children, parents, and siblings? Absolutely! The bonds we share here will continue, but they’ll be transformed and perfected. Imagine being in a place where there’s no more pain, misunderstanding, or conflict, just pure and unbroken love. That’s what Heaven offers those who believe.

In Heaven, our identity isn’t lost, it’s fulfilled. We’ll recognise and rejoice in the special connections we’ve had on Earth, but those connections will be even greater because they’ll no longer be limited by sin, separation, or the struggles we all now face.

So, while marriage as we know it won’t exist in Heaven, the love and relationships we have here will carry into Heaven, deepened and made better in ways we can’t yet imagine. What a hopeful promise to hold on to!

Reflect

  • The bonds we share with the people we care about will be made perfect in Heaven. But what could you do today to show your loved ones how much you appreciate and value them, and strengthen those connections here on earth now?

Pray

Heavenly Father, thank You for the relationships You’ve placed in our lives: our spouses, children, parents, and friends. Help us to trust Your promises and look forward to the day when we’ll experience perfect love and unity in Your presence. Amen.
