Engaging in God’s Heart for the Nations: 30-Day Devotional

DAY 6 OF 30

What’s Your Motivation? – Day 6

Lori McFall, OMS’ HOPE61 Ministry

Matthew 20:28 (ESV)

“Even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

When we say yes to God—whether it’s being a good neighbor, working in full-time ministry, or volunteering at church—the motivation behind our yes matters. God does not want our service because we believe a particular job won’t get done without us, or because a specific group of people needs what only we can offer. We certainly shouldn’t say yes so that others will see and commend our obedience. As we seek God’s will and discern his call on our lives, our motivation should be our love for God and our desire to be where he wants us, doing what he wants us to do.

Oswald Chambers said, “If our devotion is to the cause of humanity, we will be quickly defeated and brokenhearted, since we will often be confronted with a great deal of ingratitude from other people. But if we are motivated by our love for God, no amount of ingratitude will be able to hinder us from serving one another.” When you say yes to God, check your motivation, and then hang on for an amazing ride!
