After Peter’s conversion of Cornelius in Acts 10, the apostles recognized that Gentiles could also be counted as Abraham’s descendants through faith. When Paul and Barnabas set out on their first missionary journey, an unprecedented number of Gentiles become followers of Jesus. Jewish believers who held firmly to their traditions felt threatened by this influx, and began following Paul to discredit him and his gospel message. Paul writes this letter to the churches he just planted, adamantly defending the gospel message he preached and suffered so much persecution for. The message: righteousness before God is not earned through ritualistic works!
