A Biblical Mountain Walk

DAY 1 OF 3

Devotional

I don't know where you prefer to go on holiday. Maybe you dream of a few warm weeks on the beach or of long walks or perhaps the mountains might be your favourite destination.

In this short reading plan, I want to take you on a journey: a mountain hike along three biblical mountains. Mountains with tremendous meaning. It is a journey that every person should take. Over the next three days, you will discover why.

We start at Mount Sinai

Today, read the exciting story in Exodus 19 verse 1 to 20.

Imagine if you had been standing there in that hot desert at a mountain that trembles and shakes. You see lightning and hear thunder, and you hear a voice - a frightening experience for the people standing at the foot of the mountain. God Himself descended on the mountain and spoke!

We all know what God said there. You can read it in the next chapter: Exodus 20. Read it again to think about The Ten Commandments, the Holy Law of God.

  • He gave this law:
  • to show how holy He is,
  • to warn us not to do what He has forbidden,
  • but above all to make us discover who we are.

Many years later, Paul would write in his letters to the Galatians and Romans that the Law was given ‘to make us conscious of sin’. Because if there is no law to tell us what is right and wrong, we cannot know what is right and what is wrong.

If you had actually been there when God gave His Law on Mount Sinai, how do you think you would have felt? How would you have described God at that moment? What would you have concluded about yourself as a result?
