David, a Man After God’s HeartSample

David established as king
“And King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel.” (2 Samuel 5:3)
After years of affliction, David finally ascended the throne. The elders of Israel anointed him king, but that was not the defining moment in David's career. In verse 12 we read, “David knew that the Lord had established him king over Israel, and that He had exalted his kingdom for the sake of his people Israel.”
David and the people of Israel were deeply aware of God's government. As Daniel said centuries later, “Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, to whom belong wisdom and might. He changes times and seasons; He removes kings and sets up kings.” (Daniel 2:20-21)
God had appointed David as king instead of Saul, and He kept His word — even though David first went through a difficult time. No matter how much people like Saul thwart God's plans, they still come to pass. No one can bend the course of history to their will, because the Lord is ultimately in control.
Are you aware of God's influence on human history? Do you see how He fulfills His promises and rules the earth — as well as your personal life? Does that knowledge influence your view of life? How exactly?
