Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale Daily Devotional

DAY 68 OF 365

Wrath Remover There's a side of God we don't often hear about or dwell on. But it's an aspect of His nature that's just as real as anything else about Him. His wrath. Wrath is defined as "an intense anger or rage towards something." In God's case, that something is ungodliness and unrighteousness. To put it another way, God has an intense anger and rage towards sin. This is a big problem for us because as we've already seen, the human race is a race that has been infected by sin. Sin is a natural part of who we are and what we do. It's this sin that God is determined to thoroughly consume and punish. And one way or another, He will be faithful to judge every sin ever committed. Only one thing stands between our sin and God's wrath, and that's the cross. For it was on the cross that Jesus served as our propitiation. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world. (1 John 2:2 NKJV) Propitiation isn't a word we use too often anymore, but it essentially means "something that appeases and satisfies wrath." As our sinfulness was placed upon our innocent substitute, Jesus, God's fury toward sin was placed upon Him. Because Jesus was a sufficient substitute, and because His sacrifice was supreme, God's wrath was fully satisfied. And those who truly trust in this truth are saved from ever having to experience God's wrath, since Jesus suffered it for them. Several important things happened on the cross, but none are more important than this. Only one thing stands between our sin and God's wrath, and that's the cross. For it was on the cross that Jesus served as our propitiation. Think about it... What does this passage reveal to me about God? What does this passage reveal to me about myself? Based on this, what changes do I need to make? What is my prayer for today?
