Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale Daily Devotional

DAY 132 OF 365

He needs help As God looked down upon man, He acknowledged that he was alone and that it was not good for him to live like this. Man was sinless at this point, but he was still lacking something, a fundamental need that would be best met through a relationship. He needed help. So in His great faithfulness, God determined to make "a helper" for him. Before we move on, we need to consider a couple of things here because some serious marital misconceptions can creep into our thinking at this point. A husband can read this, puff himself up with pride, and think, My wife strictly exists to serve and support me! I'll use this verse the next time I want her to do something for me! While a wife can read this and think, How demeaning! God has locked me into a life of servile bondage! Not so. Look more closely. This shouldn't give men a reason to be proud. On the contrary, it ought to humble them because it shows they have a very great need. The fact that God created a helper for them only underscores how incomplete and lacking they are. If anything, this Bible passage should make men more appreciative of their wives and cause them to revere them all the more, because they understand their great value and importance. And when it comes to wives, the term "helper" is anything but demeaning. Keep in mind that God Himself is referred to as our helper (Psalm 94:17). Being a helper means a wife has strengths and resources that her husband lacks. It also means she's acting in a capacity comparable to God. That's not demeaning. It's actually empowering and dignifying. If viewed incorrectly, this passage can become a source of contention and conflict for husbands and wives. But when seen in the full light of God's Word, it serves as a shining example of the equality and harmony every marriage should have. Man needed help so God provided a "helper" for him. Think about it... What does this passage reveal to me about God? What does this passage reveal to me about myself? Based on this, what changes do I need to make? What is my prayer for today?
