What Was Jesus Like?Sample

The Servant King
Welcome back to Day 4 of the Discover Jesus devotional. So far, you’ve seen Jesus break down religious, social, and cultural barriers, welcome the marginalized, and challenge critics through thought-provoking parables. Today, we’ll step behind closed doors to see a deeply personal side of Jesus as He spends one final evening with His closest friends before His crucifixion.
Reminder: Take time to read today’s passage on your own or with a friend. Then, when you catch up this week—whether in person or on a call—share what stood out, reflect on your insights, and discuss how it connects to your life. Keep the conversation going!
The scene is set at what we now call “The Last Supper.” Fully aware of the betrayal, arrest, and agony awaiting Him, Jesus gathers His disciples including Judas, the one who would betray Him. In this intimate moment, He imparts final teachings and demonstrates what love and leadership look like in His kingdom.
In a shocking act for His time, Jesus washes His disciples’ feet—a menial task reserved for the lowest servants. Foot washing was customary in that era, but for a master or teacher to stoop to serve in this way was unthinkable. Yet, Jesus takes on the role of a servant, washing the feet of all twelve of His followers, even Judas, the one who would soon betray Him. This act wasn’t just about cleanliness—it was a profound expression of humility, love, and sacrifice, foreshadowing His ultimate act of service on the cross. By performing this humble task, Jesus flips the expectations of power and status, showing that true greatness in His kingdom is found in serving others, even those who would turn against you.
When He finishes, Jesus gives His disciples a new command: “Love one another as I have loved you.” He moves beyond the established teaching of loving others as you love yourself. Instead, He calls His followers to love selflessly and sacrificially, as He has demonstrated. For the community Jesus is building, greatness isn’t about power or status; it’s about serving others with humility and love.
This moment reveals so much about Jesus’ character. Despite the betrayal and suffering He knows lies ahead, He remains focused on teaching and modeling love. His actions challenge us to think about what true leadership and love look like, inviting us to embrace a way of living that puts others first, even in the most difficult of circumstances.
