         <div class="label">44</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">A Silver Cup in a Sack</span></div><div class="p"><span class="content">  </span><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="GEN.44.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">Now Joseph gave these instructions to the steward of his house: &#8220;Fill the men&#8217;s sacks with as much food as they can carry, and put each man&#8217;s silver in the mouth of his sack. </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="GEN.44.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">Then put my cup, the silver one, in the mouth of the youngest one&#8217;s sack, along with the silver for his grain.&#8221; And he did as Joseph said.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="GEN.44.2"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="GEN.44.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">As morning dawned, the men were sent on their way with their donkeys. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="GEN.44.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">They had not gone far from the city when Joseph said to his steward, &#8220;Go after those men at once, and when you catch up with them, say to them, &#8216;Why have you repaid good with evil? </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="GEN.44.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">Isn&#8217;t this the cup my master drinks from and also uses for divination? This is a wicked thing you have done.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="GEN.44.5"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="GEN.44.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">When he caught up with them, he repeated these words to them. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="GEN.44.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">But they said to him, &#8220;Why does my lord say such things? Far be it from your servants to do anything like that! </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="GEN.44.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">We even brought back to you from the land of Canaan the silver we found inside the mouths of our sacks. So why would we steal silver or gold from your master&#8217;s house? </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="GEN.44.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">If any of your servants is found to have it, he will die; and the rest of us will become my lord&#8217;s slaves.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="GEN.44.9"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="GEN.44.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">&#8220;Very well, then,&#8221; he said, &#8220;let it be as you say. Whoever is found to have it will become my slave; the rest of you will be free from blame.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="GEN.44.10"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="GEN.44.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">Each of them quickly lowered his sack to the ground and opened it. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="GEN.44.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">Then the steward proceeded to search, beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest. And the cup was found in Benjamin&#8217;s sack. </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="GEN.44.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">At this, they tore their clothes. Then they all loaded their donkeys and returned to the city.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="GEN.44.13"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="GEN.44.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">Joseph was still in the house when Judah and his brothers came in, and they threw themselves to the ground before him. </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="GEN.44.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">Joseph said to them, &#8220;What is this you have done? Don&#8217;t you know that a man like me can find things out by divination?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="GEN.44.15"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="GEN.44.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">&#8220;What can we say to my lord?&#8221; Judah replied. &#8220;What can we say? How can we prove our innocence? God has uncovered your servants&#8217; guilt. We are now my lord&#8217;s slaves&#8212;we ourselves and the one who was found to have the cup.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="GEN.44.16"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="GEN.44.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">But Joseph said, &#8220;Far be it from me to do such a thing! Only the man who was found to have the cup will become my slave. The rest of you, go back to your father in peace.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="GEN.44.17"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="GEN.44.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">Then Judah went up to him and said: &#8220;Pardon your servant, my lord, let me speak a word to my lord. Do not be angry with your servant, though you are equal to Pharaoh himself. </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="GEN.44.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">My lord asked his servants, &#8216;Do you have a father or a brother?&#8217; </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="GEN.44.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">And we answered, &#8216;We have an aged father, and there is a young son born to him in his old age. His brother is dead, and he is the only one of his mother&#8217;s sons left, and his father loves him.&#8217;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="GEN.44.20"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="GEN.44.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">&#8220;Then you said to your servants, &#8216;Bring him down to me so I can see him for myself.&#8217; </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="GEN.44.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">And we said to my lord, &#8216;The boy cannot leave his father; if he leaves him, his father will die.&#8217; </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="GEN.44.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">But you told your servants, &#8216;Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.&#8217; </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="GEN.44.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">When we went back to your servant my father, we told him what my lord had said.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="GEN.44.24"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="GEN.44.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="content">&#8220;Then our father said, &#8216;Go back and buy a little more food.&#8217; </span></span><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="GEN.44.26"><span class="label">26</span><span class="content">But we said, &#8216;We cannot go down. Only if our youngest brother is with us will we go. We cannot see the man&#8217;s face unless our youngest brother is with us.&#8217;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="GEN.44.26"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="GEN.44.27"><span class="label">27</span><span class="content">&#8220;Your servant my father said to us, &#8216;You know that my wife bore me two sons. </span></span><span class="verse v28" data-usfm="GEN.44.28"><span class="label">28</span><span class="content">One of them went away from me, and I said, &#8220;He has surely been torn to pieces.&#8221; And I have not seen him since. </span></span><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="GEN.44.29"><span class="label">29</span><span class="content">If you take this one from me too and harm comes to him, you will bring my gray head down to the grave in misery.&#8217;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="GEN.44.29"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v30" data-usfm="GEN.44.30"><span class="label">30</span><span class="content">&#8220;So now, if the boy is not with us when I go back to your servant my father, and if my father, whose life is closely bound up with the boy&#8217;s life, </span></span><span class="verse v31" data-usfm="GEN.44.31"><span class="label">31</span><span class="content">sees that the boy isn&#8217;t there, he will die. Your servants will bring the gray head of our father down to the grave in sorrow. </span></span><span class="verse v32" data-usfm="GEN.44.32"><span class="label">32</span><span class="content">Your servant guaranteed the boy&#8217;s safety to my father. I said, &#8216;If I do not bring him back to you, I will bear the blame before you, my father, all my life!&#8217;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v32" data-usfm="GEN.44.32"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v33" data-usfm="GEN.44.33"><span class="label">33</span><span class="content">&#8220;Now then, please let your servant remain here as my lord&#8217;s slave in place of the boy, and let the boy return with his brothers. </span></span><span class="verse v34" data-usfm="GEN.44.34"><span class="label">34</span><span class="content">How can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? No! Do not let me see the misery that would come on my father.&#8221;</span></span></div>

         <div class="label">45</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Joseph Makes Himself Known</span></div><div class="p"><span class="content">  </span><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="GEN.45.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">Then Joseph could no longer control himself before all his attendants, and he cried out, &#8220;Have everyone leave my presence!&#8221; So there was no one with Joseph when he made himself known to his brothers. </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="GEN.45.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">And he wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard him, and Pharaoh&#8217;s household heard about it.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="GEN.45.2"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="GEN.45.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">Joseph said to his brothers, &#8220;I am Joseph! Is my father still living?&#8221; But his brothers were not able to answer him, because they were terrified at his presence.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="GEN.45.3"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="GEN.45.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">Then Joseph said to his brothers, &#8220;Come close to me.&#8221; When they had done so, he said, &#8220;I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt! </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="GEN.45.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="GEN.45.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">For two years now there has been famine in the land, and for the next five years there will be no plowing and reaping. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="GEN.45.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance.</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">45:7 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">save you as a great band of survivors</span></span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="GEN.45.7"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="GEN.45.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">&#8220;So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God. He made me father to Pharaoh, lord of his entire household and ruler of all Egypt. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="GEN.45.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">Now hurry back to my father and say to him, &#8216;This is what your son Joseph says: God has made me lord of all Egypt. Come down to me; don&#8217;t delay. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="GEN.45.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">You shall live in the region of Goshen and be near me&#8212;you, your children and grandchildren, your flocks and herds, and all you have. </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="GEN.45.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">I will provide for you there, because five years of famine are still to come. Otherwise you and your household and all who belong to you will become destitute.&#8217;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="GEN.45.11"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="GEN.45.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">&#8220;You can see for yourselves, and so can my brother Benjamin, that it is really I who am speaking to you. </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="GEN.45.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">Tell my father about all the honor accorded me in Egypt and about everything you have seen. And bring my father down here quickly.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="GEN.45.13"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="GEN.45.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">Then he threw his arms around his brother Benjamin and wept, and Benjamin embraced him, weeping. </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="GEN.45.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">And he kissed all his brothers and wept over them. Afterward his brothers talked with him.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="GEN.45.15"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="GEN.45.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">When the news reached Pharaoh&#8217;s palace that Joseph&#8217;s brothers had come, Pharaoh and all his officials were pleased. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="GEN.45.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">Pharaoh said to Joseph, &#8220;Tell your brothers, &#8216;Do this: Load your animals and return to the land of Canaan, </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="GEN.45.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">and bring your father and your families back to me. I will give you the best of the land of Egypt and you can enjoy the fat of the land.&#8217;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="GEN.45.18"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="GEN.45.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">&#8220;You are also directed to tell them, &#8216;Do this: Take some carts from Egypt for your children and your wives, and get your father and come. </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="GEN.45.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">Never mind about your belongings, because the best of all Egypt will be yours.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="GEN.45.20"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="GEN.45.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">So the sons of Israel did this. Joseph gave them carts, as Pharaoh had commanded, and he also gave them provisions for their journey. </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="GEN.45.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">To each of them he gave new clothing, but to Benjamin he gave three hundred shekels</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">45:22 </span><span class="ft">That is, about 7 1/2 pounds or about 3.5 kilograms</span></span></span><span class="content"> of silver and five sets of clothes. </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="GEN.45.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">And this is what he sent to his father: ten donkeys loaded with the best things of Egypt, and ten female donkeys loaded with grain and bread and other provisions for his journey. </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="GEN.45.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">Then he sent his brothers away, and as they were leaving he said to them, &#8220;Don&#8217;t quarrel on the way!&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="GEN.45.24"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="GEN.45.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="content">So they went up out of Egypt and came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan. </span></span><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="GEN.45.26"><span class="label">26</span><span class="content">They told him, &#8220;Joseph is still alive! In fact, he is ruler of all Egypt.&#8221; Jacob was stunned; he did not believe them. </span></span><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="GEN.45.27"><span class="label">27</span><span class="content">But when they told him everything Joseph had said to them, and when he saw the carts Joseph had sent to carry him back, the spirit of their father Jacob revived. </span></span><span class="verse v28" data-usfm="GEN.45.28"><span class="label">28</span><span class="content">And Israel said, &#8220;I&#8217;m convinced! My son Joseph is still alive. I will go and see him before I die.&#8221;</span></span></div>

Jacob!&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="GEN.46.2"><span class="content">&#8220;Here I am,&#8221; he replied.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="GEN.46.2"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="GEN.46.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">&#8220;I am God, the God of your father,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="GEN.46.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="LUK.18.8"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="LUK.18.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="LUK.18.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.</span></span><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="LUK.18.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: &#8216;God, I thank you that I am not like other people&#8212;robbers, evildoers, adulterers&#8212;or even like this tax collector.</span></span><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="LUK.18.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.&#8217;</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="LUK.18.12"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="LUK.18.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">  </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;But the tax collector stood at a distance. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The Little Children and Jesus</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="LUK.18.14"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="LUK.18.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">People were also bringing babies to Jesus for him to place his hands on them. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them. </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="LUK.18.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">But Jesus called the children to him and said, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.</span></span><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="LUK.18.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The Rich and the Kingdom of God</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="LUK.18.17"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="LUK.18.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">A certain ruler asked him, &#8220;Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="LUK.18.18"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="LUK.18.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">  </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Why do you call me good?&#8221;</span></span><span class="content"> Jesus answered. </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;No one is good&#8212;except God alone.</span></span><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="LUK.18.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">You know the commandments: &#8216;You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.&#8217;</span></span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">18:20 </span><span class="ft">Exodus 20:12-16; Deut. 5:16-20</span></span></span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="LUK.18.20"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="LUK.18.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">&#8220;All these I have kept since I was a boy,&#8221; he said.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="LUK.18.21"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="LUK.18.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">When Jesus heard this, he said to him, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="LUK.18.22"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="LUK.18.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy. </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="LUK.18.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">Jesus looked at him and said, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!</span></span><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="LUK.18.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="LUK.18.25"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="LUK.18.26"><span class="label">26</span><span class="content">Those who heard this asked, &#8220;Who then can be saved?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="LUK.18.26"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="LUK.18.27"><span class="label">27</span><span class="content">Jesus replied, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;What is impossible with man is possible with God.&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="LUK.18.27"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v28" data-usfm="LUK.18.28"><span class="label">28</span><span class="content">Peter said to him, &#8220;We have left all we had to follow you!&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v28" data-usfm="LUK.18.28"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="LUK.18.29"><span class="label">29</span><span class="content">  </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Truly I tell you,&#8221;</span></span><span class="content"> Jesus said to them, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;no one who has left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God</span></span><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v30" data-usfm="LUK.18.30"><span class="label">30</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come eternal life.&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Jesus Predicts His Death a Third Time</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v30" data-usfm="LUK.18.30"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v31" data-usfm="LUK.18.31"><span class="label">31</span><span class="content">Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled.</span></span><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v32" data-usfm="LUK.18.32"><span class="label">32</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">He will be delivered over to the Gentiles. They will mock him, insult him and spit on him;</span></span><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v33" data-usfm="LUK.18.33"><span class="label">33</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">they will flog him and kill him. On the third day he will rise again.&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v33" data-usfm="LUK.18.33"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v34" data-usfm="LUK.18.34"><span class="label">34</span><span class="content">The disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know what he was talking about.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">A Blind Beggar Receives His Sight</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v34" data-usfm="LUK.18.34"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v35" data-usfm="LUK.18.35"><span class="label">35</span><span class="content">As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. </span></span><span class="verse v36" data-usfm="LUK.18.36"><span class="label">36</span><span class="content">When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. </span></span><span class="verse v37" data-usfm="LUK.18.37"><span class="label">37</span><span class="content">They told him, &#8220;Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v37" data-usfm="LUK.18.37"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v38" data-usfm="LUK.18.38"><span class="label">38</span><span class="content">He called out, &#8220;Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v38" data-usfm="LUK.18.38"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v39" data-usfm="LUK.18.39"><span class="label">39</span><span class="content">Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, &#8220;Son of David, have mercy on me!&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v39" data-usfm="LUK.18.39"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v40" data-usfm="LUK.18.40"><span class="label">40</span><span class="content">Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him.
