 <div class="p">18&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Follow my decrees and be careful to obey my laws, and you will live safely in the land. 19Then the land will yield its fruit, and you will eat your fill and live there in safety. 20You may ask, &#8220;What will we eat in the seventh year if we do not plant or harvest our crops?&#8221; 21I will send you such a blessing in the sixth year that the land will yield enough for three years. 22While you plant during the eighth year, you will eat from the old crop and will continue to eat from it until the harvest of the ninth year comes in.</div><div class="p"> 23&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;The land must not be sold permanently, because the land is mine and you reside in my land as foreigners and strangers. 24Throughout the land that you hold as a possession, you must provide for the redemption of the land.</div><div class="p"> 25&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;If one of your fellow Israelites becomes poor and sells some of their property, their nearest relative is to come and redeem what they have sold. 26If, however, there is no one to redeem it for them but later on they prosper and acquire sufficient means to redeem it themselves, 27they are to determine the value for the years since they sold it and refund the balance to the one to whom they sold it; they can then go back to their own property. 28But if they do not acquire the means to repay, what was sold will remain in the possession of the buyer until the Year of Jubilee. It will be returned in the Jubilee, and they can then go back to their property.</div><div class="p"> 29&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Anyone who sells a house in a walled city retains the right of redemption a full year after its sale. During that time the seller may redeem it. 30If it is not redeemed before a full year has passed, the house in the walled city shall belong permanently to the buyer and the buyer&#8217;s descendants. It is not to be returned in the Jubilee. 31But houses in villages without walls around them are to be considered as belonging to the open country. They can be redeemed, and they are to be returned in the Jubilee.</div><div class="p"> 32&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;The Levites always have the right to redeem their houses in the Levitical towns, which they possess. 33So the property of the Levites is redeemable&#8212;that is, a house sold in any town they hold&#8212;and is to be returned in the Jubilee, because the houses in the towns of the Levites are their property among the Israelites. 34But the pastureland belonging to their towns must not be sold; it is their permanent possession.</div><div class="p"> 35&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and are unable to support themselves among you, help them as you would a foreigner and stranger, so they can continue to live among you. 36Do not take interest or any profit from them, but fear your God, so that they may continue to live among you. 37You must not lend them money at interest or sell them food at a profit. 38I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan and to be your God.</div><div class="p"> 39&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and sell themselves to you, do not make them work as slaves. 40They are to be treated as hired workers or temporary residents among you; they are to work for you until the Year of Jubilee. 41Then they and their children are to be released, and they will go back to their own clans and to the property of their ancestors. 42Because the Israelites are my servants, whom I brought out of Egypt, they must not be sold as slaves. 43Do not rule over them ruthlessly, but fear your God.</div><div class="p"> 44&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. 45You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. 46You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.</div><div class="p"> 47&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;If a foreigner residing among you becomes rich and any of your fellow Israelites become poor and sell themselves to the foreigner or to a member of the foreigner&#8217;s clan, 48they retain the right of redemption after they have sold themselves. One of their relatives may redeem them: 49An uncle or a cousin or any blood relative in their clan may redeem them. Or if they prosper, they may redeem themselves. 50They and their buyer are to count the time from the year they sold themselves up to the Year of Jubilee. The price for their release is to be based on the rate paid to a hired worker for that number of years. 51If many years remain, they must pay for their redemption a larger share of the price paid for them. 52If only a few years remain until the Year of Jubilee, they are to compute that and pay for their redemption accordingly. 53They are to be treated as workers hired from year to year; you must see to it that those to whom they owe service do not rule over them ruthlessly.</div><div class="p"> 54&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Even if someone is not redeemed in any of these ways, they and their children are to be released in the Year of Jubilee, 55for the Israelites belong to me as servants. They are my servants, whom I brought out of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.</div>

 <div class="label">7</div><div class="s1">False Religion Worthless</div><div class="p"> 1This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2&#8220;Stand at the gate of the Lord&#8217;s house and there proclaim this message:</div><div class="p">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Hear the word of the Lord, all you people of Judah who come through these gates to worship the Lord. 3This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Reform your ways and your actions, and I will let you live in this place. 4Do not trust in deceptive words and say, &#8220;This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord!&#8221; 5If you really change your ways and your actions and deal with each other justly, 6if you do not oppress the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow and do not shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not follow other gods to your own harm, 7then I will let you live in this place, in the land I gave your ancestors for ever and ever. 8But look, you are trusting in deceptive words that are worthless.</div><div class="p"> 9&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Will you steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury,#7:9 Or and swear by false gods burn incense to Baal and follow other gods you have not known, 10and then come and stand before me in this house, which bears my Name, and say, &#8220;We are safe&#8221;&#8212;safe to do all these detestable things? 11Has this house, which bears my Name, become a den of robbers to you? But I have been watching! declares the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 12&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Go now to the place in Shiloh where I first made a dwelling for my Name, and see what I did to it because of the wickedness of my people Israel. 13While you were doing all these things, declares the Lord, I spoke to you again and again, but you did not listen; I called you, but you did not answer. 14Therefore, what I did to Shiloh I will now do to the house that bears my Name, the temple you trust in, the place I gave to you and your ancestors. 15I will thrust you from my presence, just as I did all your fellow Israelites, the people of Ephraim.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 16&#8220;So do not pray for this people nor offer any plea or petition for them; do not plead with me, for I will not listen to you. 17Do you not see what they are doing in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 18The children gather wood, the fathers light the fire, and the women knead the dough and make cakes to offer to the Queen of Heaven. They pour out drink offerings to other gods to arouse my anger. 19But am I the one they are provoking? declares the Lord. Are they not rather harming themselves, to their own shame?</div><div class="p"> 20&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: My anger and my wrath will be poured out on this place&#8212;on man and beast, on the trees of the field and on the crops of your land&#8212;and it will burn and not be quenched.</div><div class="p"> 21&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Go ahead, add your burnt offerings to your other sacrifices and eat the meat yourselves! 22For when I brought your ancestors out of Egypt and spoke to them, I did not just give them commands about burnt offerings and sacrifices, 23but I gave them this command: Obey me, and I will be your God and you will be my people. Walk in obedience to all I command you, that it may go well with you. 24But they did not listen or pay attention; instead, they followed the stubborn inclinations of their evil hearts. They went backward and not forward. 25From the time your ancestors left Egypt until now, day after day, again and again I sent you my servants the prophets. 26But they did not listen to me or pay attention. They were stiff-necked and did more evil than their ancestors.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 27&#8220;When you tell them all this, they will not listen to you; when you call to them, they will not answer. 28Therefore say to them, &#8216;This is the nation that has not obeyed the Lord its God or responded to correction. Truth has perished; it has vanished from their lips.</div><div class="p"> 29&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Cut off your hair and throw it away; take up a lament on the barren heights, for the Lord has rejected and abandoned this generation that is under his wrath.</div><div class="s1">The Valley of Slaughter</div><div class="p"> 30&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;The people of Judah have done evil in my eyes, declares the Lord. They have set up their detestable idols in the house that bears my Name and have defiled it. 31They have built the high places of Topheth in the Valley of Ben Hinnom to burn their sons and daughters in the fire&#8212;something I did not command, nor did it enter my mind. 32So beware, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when people will no longer call it Topheth or the Valley of Ben Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter, for they will bury the dead in Topheth until there is no more room. 33Then the carcasses of this people will become food for the birds and the wild animals, and there will be no one to frighten them away. 34I will bring an end to the sounds of joy and gladness and to the voices of bride and bridegroom in the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem, for the land will become desolate.</div>

Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. 3Then Mary took about a pint#12:3 Or about 0.5 liter of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus&#8217; feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.</div><div class="p"> 4But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, 5&#8220;Why wasn&#8217;t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year&#8217;s wages.#12:5 Greek three hundred denarii&#8221; 6He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.</div><div class="p"> 7 &#8220;Leave her alone,&#8221; Jesus replied. &#8220;It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. 8You will always have the poor among you,#12:8 See Deut. 15:11. but you will not always have me.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 9Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 10So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well, 11for on account of him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and believing in him.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King</div><div class="p"> 12The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. 13They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting,</div><div class="q1">&#8220;Hosanna!#12:13 A Hebrew expression meaning &#8220;Save!&#8221; which became an exclamation of praise&#8221;</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1">&#8220;Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!&#8221;#12:13 Psalm 118:25,26</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1">&#8220;Blessed is the king of Israel!&#8221;</div><div class="m"> 14Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written:</div><div class="q1"> 15&#8220;Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion;</div><div class="q2">see, your king is coming,</div><div class="q2">seated on a donkey&#8217;s colt.&#8221;#12:15 Zech. 9:9</div><div class="p"> 16At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him.</div><div class="p"> 17Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. 18Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign, went out to meet him. 19So the Pharisees said to one another, &#8220;See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Jesus Predicts His Death</div><div class="p"> 20Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the festival. 21They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. &#8220;Sir,&#8221; they said, &#8220;we would like to see Jesus.&#8221; 22Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.</div><div class="p"> 23Jesus replied, &#8220;The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 25Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.</div><div class="p"> </div>

I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ 9and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in#3:9 Or through the faithfulness of Christ&#8212;the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. 10I want to know Christ&#8212;yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead.</div><div class="p"> </div>
