It was the end of the line. God had had enough. He had delivered the Israelites from Egypt, brought them safely through the Red Sea on dry ground, fed them with manna and quail, and quenched their thirst with water from a rock. After all that, they had crafted a golden calf and began to worship it! The Israelites were so rebellious God knew He might have to destroy them if He continued to the promised land with them. So, in His kindness, God decided He’d send an angel to lead them, but His presence would no longer dwell within the camp. He just couldn’t go with them.

Some people might have received that news and thought, “Well, at least we’re still going to a land flowing with milk and honey. And yeah, I don’t want God to get so angry with us that He kills us all, so maybe this arrangement is for the best.” Not Moses, though. All he heard was that God wasn’t going to go with them. That was too much. He didn’t want the promised land if he couldn’t have God’s presence. God’s blessings pale in comparison with God Himself. Moses knew that. The promised land would be just another slice of real estate without the presence of God. God, and God alone, is the treasure. May we seek Him above all.
