Day 2: Matthew 11-20

“No servant is greater than his master.”

I’ve often seen Jesus as the great Player/Coach. He is on the field doing the work while teaching and coaching the other players—you and me.

As a Player, Jesus, in chapters 1–10, showed us what it was like to both teach about the kingdom and demonstrate the kingdom at the same time. In chapter 10, we see Jesus transitioning into a Coach as He sends out His 12 disciples on mission—the same mission that Jesus Himself had modeled for them in the previous chapters.

Even after Jesus sent His disciples out, He continued doing the works. He remained a Player on the field. This reminds me that even after Jesus died, was raised, and poured out His Spirit, He continues to work alongside us in His intercession on our behalf.

In chapters 11–20, we see Jesus continuing His kingdom work (being a Player) while His disciples come in and go back out. Simultaneously, as a Coach, Jesus teaches much about the stewardship of the things we’ve been given. You will also notice Jesus coaching on matters of the heart, knowing full well how heart issues can affect both the inflow and the outflow of the kingdom.

As you read through these chapters, notice how Jesus models the work of the kingdom, delegates the work of the kingdom, and continues teaching about the works of the kingdom—all at the same time. Truly, Jesus is our great model of a Player/Coach.

Whether you’re leading a home as a mom, a business as a CEO, or a team in any capacity, think about how you can be like Jesus—acting as both a Player on the field and a Coach off the field.
