DAY 12 OF 29

Fear kills. It puts us in disarray. It disarms us. It cripples us. For this reason, God never fails to charge and remind us not to fear while carrying out His plans and purposes. He knows its power to torment and hinder us from doing what He wants us to do. (1 John 4:18) When God revealed to Abraham His promise to make him the father of many nations, He charged him not to fear. (Genesis 15:1-6) Likewise, He bade Joshua to be strong and be of good courage to lead His people to possess the Promised Land. For just as He was with Moses, so will He be with him. (Joshua 1:9) When Israel slowly had backslidden from following God, a prophet was raised for them. God called Jeremiah to be His voice in their midst and He charged him not to be afraid of the people’s faces. He promised He would be with him to deliver him from all troubles. (Jeremiah 1:18) God did the same with every man who dared take the challenge to obey Him and to fulfill His divine will. When Jesus knew that the hour of His death has come, He charged His disciples to take heart so they could continue His ministry as soon as He is back to heaven. He promised them, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27) Fear is not from God. “For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7) Power, love and sound mind can only come from God. He gives these to those who believe Him. He gives them power to press on despite the trials they face. He gives them love to endure hardships that come their way. He gives them sound mind to grasp His perfect will no matter how confusing the situations are. Fear will not conquer him who has put his confidence in God’s wisdom and sovereignty. As Hebrews 13:6 puts it, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?” We will always hear about sad or tragic news. And we also have our own sad stories to tell. But it is best to trust Him who promised that His plan for us is to bless us and not to harm us, to give us hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11) Reflection: 1. What harm can fear do to us? 2. What is the thing that you fear most? Why? What steps do you make to conquer your fear? Fear is an old trick that makes us believe a lie.
