 <div class="label">5</div><div class="s1">The Healing at the Pool</div><div class="p"> 1Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. 2Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda#5:2 Some manuscripts Bethzatha; other manuscripts Bethsaida and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 3Here a great number of disabled people used to lie&#8212;the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. [4]#5:3,4 Some manuscripts include here, wholly or in part, paralyzed&#8212;and they waited for the moving of the waters. 4 From time to time an angel of the Lord would come down and stir up the waters. The first one into the pool after each such disturbance would be cured of whatever disease they had. 5One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, &#8220;Do you want to get well?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 7&#8220;Sir,&#8221; the invalid replied, &#8220;I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 8Then Jesus said to him, &#8220;Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.&#8221; 9At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.</div><div class="p">The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, 10and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, &#8220;It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 11But he replied, &#8220;The man who made me well said to me, &#8216;Pick up your mat and walk.&#8217; &#8221;</div><div class="p"> 12So they asked him, &#8220;Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 13The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.</div><div class="p"> 14Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, &#8220;See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.&#8221; 15The man went away and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had made him well.</div><div class="s1">The Authority of the Son</div><div class="p"> 16So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 17In his defense Jesus said to them, &#8220;My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.&#8221; 18For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.</div><div class="p"> 19Jesus gave them this answer: &#8220;Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. 21For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. 22Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, 23that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.</div><div class="p"> 24 &#8220;Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. 25Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.</div><div class="p"> 28 &#8220;Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29and come out&#8212;those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned. 30By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.</div><div class="s1">Testimonies About Jesus</div><div class="p"> 31 &#8220;If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true. 32There is another who testifies in my favor, and I know that his testimony about me is true.</div><div class="p"> 33 &#8220;You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth. 34Not that I accept human testimony; but I mention it that you may be saved. 35John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.</div><div class="p"> 36 &#8220;I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to finish&#8212;the very works that I am doing&#8212;testify that the Father has sent me. 37And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, 38nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent. 39You study#5:39 Or 39 Study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, 40yet you refuse to come to me to have life.</div><div class="p"> 41 &#8220;I do not accept glory from human beings, 42but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. 43I have come in my Father&#8217;s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. 44How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God#5:44 Some early manuscripts the Only One?</div><div class="p"> 45 &#8220;But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set. 46If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. 47But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">12</div><div class="s1">Warriors Join David</div><div class="p"> 1These were the men who came to David at Ziklag, while he was banished from the presence of Saul son of Kish (they were among the warriors who helped him in battle; 2they were armed with bows and were able to shoot arrows or to sling stones right-handed or left-handed; they were relatives of Saul from the tribe of Benjamin):</div><div class="b"></div><div class="mi"> 3Ahiezer their chief and Joash the sons of Shemaah the Gibeathite; Jeziel and Pelet the sons of Azmaveth; Berakah, Jehu the Anathothite, 4and Ishmaiah the Gibeonite, a mighty warrior among the Thirty, who was a leader of the Thirty; Jeremiah, Jahaziel, Johanan, Jozabad the Gederathite,#12:4 In Hebrew texts the second half of this verse (Jeremiah&#8230; Gederathite) is numbered 12:5, and 12:5-40 is numbered 12:6-41. 5Eluzai, Jerimoth, Bealiah, Shemariah and Shephatiah the Haruphite; 6Elkanah, Ishiah, Azarel, Joezer and Jashobeam the Korahites; 7and Joelah and Zebadiah the sons of Jeroham from Gedor.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="p"> 8Some Gadites defected to David at his stronghold in the wilderness. They were brave warriors, ready for battle and able to handle the shield and spear. Their faces were the faces of lions, and they were as swift as gazelles in the mountains.</div><div class="li1"> 9Ezer was the chief,</div><div class="li1">Obadiah the second in command, Eliab the third,</div><div class="li1"> 10Mishmannah the fourth, Jeremiah the fifth,</div><div class="li1"> 11Attai the sixth, Eliel the seventh,</div><div class="li1"> 12Johanan the eighth, Elzabad the ninth,</div><div class="li1"> 13Jeremiah the tenth and Makbannai the eleventh.</div><div class="p"> 14These Gadites were army commanders; the least was a match for a hundred, and the greatest for a thousand. 15It was they who crossed the Jordan in the first month when it was overflowing all its banks, and they put to flight everyone living in the valleys, to the east and to the west.</div><div class="p"> 16Other Benjamites and some men from Judah also came to David in his stronghold. 17David went out to meet them and said to them, &#8220;If you have come to me in peace to help me, I am ready for you to join me. But if you have come to betray me to my enemies when my hands are free from violence, may the God of our ancestors see it and judge you.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 18Then the Spirit came on Amasai, chief of the Thirty, and he said:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;We are yours, David!</div><div class="q2">We are with you, son of Jesse!</div><div class="q1">Success, success to you,</div><div class="q2">and success to those who help you,</div><div class="q3">for your God will help you.&#8221;</div><div class="p">So David received them and made them leaders of his raiding bands.</div><div class="p"> 19Some of the tribe of Manasseh defected to David when he went with the Philistines to fight against Saul. (He and his men did not help the Philistines because, after consultation, their rulers sent him away. They said, &#8220;It will cost us our heads if he deserts to his master Saul.&#8221;) 20When David went to Ziklag, these were the men of Manasseh who defected to him: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu and Zillethai, leaders of units of a thousand in Manasseh. 21They helped David against raiding bands, for all of them were brave warriors, and they were commanders in his army. 22Day after day men came to help David, until he had a great army, like the army of God.#12:22 Or a great and mighty army</div><div class="s1">Others Join David at Hebron</div><div class="p"> 23These are the numbers of the men armed for battle who came to David at Hebron to turn Saul&#8217;s kingdom over to him, as the Lord had said:</div><div class="li1"> 24from Judah, carrying shield and spear&#8212;6,800 armed for battle;</div><div class="li1"> 25from Simeon, warriors ready for battle&#8212;7,100;</div><div class="li1"> 26from Levi&#8212;4,600, 27including Jehoiada, leader of the family of Aaron, with 3,700 men, 28and Zadok, a brave young warrior, with 22 officers from his family;</div><div class="li1"> 29from Benjamin, Saul&#8217;s tribe&#8212;3,000, most of whom had remained loyal to Saul&#8217;s house until then;</div><div class="li1"> 30from Ephraim, brave warriors, famous in their own clans&#8212;20,800;</div><div class="li1"> 31from half the tribe of Manasseh, designated by name to come and make David king&#8212;18,000;</div><div class="li1"> 32from Issachar, men who understood the times and knew what Israel should do&#8212;200 chiefs, with all their relatives under their command;</div><div class="li1"> 33from Zebulun, experienced soldiers prepared for battle with every type of weapon, to help David with undivided loyalty&#8212;50,000;</div><div class="li1"> 34from Naphtali&#8212;1,000 officers, together with 37,000 men carrying shields and spears;</div><div class="li1"> 35from Dan, ready for battle&#8212;28,600;</div><div class="li1"> 36from Asher, experienced soldiers prepared for battle&#8212;40,000;</div><div class="li1"> 37and from east of the Jordan, from Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh, armed with every type of weapon&#8212;120,000.</div><div class="p"> 38All these were fighting men who volunteered to serve in the ranks. They came to Hebron fully determined to make David king over all Israel. All the rest of the Israelites were also of one mind to make David king. 39The men spent three days there with David, eating and drinking, for their families had supplied provisions for them. 40Also, their neighbors from as far away as Issachar, Zebulun and Naphtali came bringing food on donkeys, camels, mules and oxen. There were plentiful supplies of flour, fig cakes, raisin cakes, wine, olive oil, cattle and sheep, for there was joy in Israel.</div>

 <div class="label">13</div><div class="s1">Abijah King of Judah</div><div class="p"> 1In the eighteenth year of the reign of Jeroboam, Abijah became king of Judah, 2and he reigned in Jerusalem three years. His mother&#8217;s name was Maakah,#13:2 Most Septuagint manuscripts and Syriac (see also 11:20 and 1 Kings 15:2); Hebrew Micaiah a daughter#13:2 Or granddaughter of Uriel of Gibeah.</div><div class="p">There was war between Abijah and Jeroboam. 3Abijah went into battle with an army of four hundred thousand able fighting men, and Jeroboam drew up a battle line against him with eight hundred thousand able troops.</div><div class="p"> 4Abijah stood on Mount Zemaraim, in the hill country of Ephraim, and said, &#8220;Jeroboam and all Israel, listen to me! 5Don&#8217;t you know that the Lord, the God of Israel, has given the kingship of Israel to David and his descendants forever by a covenant of salt? 6Yet Jeroboam son of Nebat, an official of Solomon son of David, rebelled against his master. 7Some worthless scoundrels gathered around him and opposed Rehoboam son of Solomon when he was young and indecisive and not strong enough to resist them.</div><div class="p"> 8&#8220;And now you plan to resist the kingdom of the Lord, which is in the hands of David&#8217;s descendants. You are indeed a vast army and have with you the golden calves that Jeroboam made to be your gods. 9But didn&#8217;t you drive out the priests of the Lord, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and make priests of your own as the peoples of other lands do? Whoever comes to consecrate himself with a young bull and seven rams may become a priest of what are not gods.</div><div class="p"> 10&#8220;As for us, the Lord is our God, and we have not forsaken him. The priests who serve the Lord are sons of Aaron, and the Levites assist them. 11Every morning and evening they present burnt offerings and fragrant incense to the Lord. They set out the bread on the ceremonially clean table and light the lamps on the gold lampstand every evening. We are observing the requirements of the Lord our God. But you have forsaken him. 12God is with us; he is our leader. His priests with their trumpets will sound the battle cry against you. People of Israel, do not fight against the Lord, the God of your ancestors, for you will not succeed.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 13Now Jeroboam had sent troops around to the rear, so that while he was in front of Judah the ambush was behind them. 14Judah turned and saw that they were being attacked at both front and rear. Then they cried out to the Lord. The priests blew their trumpets 15and the men of Judah raised the battle cry. At the sound of their battle cry, God routed Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah. 16The Israelites fled before Judah, and God delivered them into their hands. 17Abijah and his troops inflicted heavy losses on them, so that there were five hundred thousand casualties among Israel&#8217;s able men. 18The Israelites were subdued on that occasion, and the people of Judah were victorious because they relied on the Lord, the God of their ancestors.</div><div class="p"> 19Abijah pursued Jeroboam and took from him the towns of Bethel, Jeshanah and Ephron, with their surrounding villages. 20Jeroboam did not regain power during the time of Abijah. And the Lord struck him down and he died.</div><div class="p"> 21But Abijah grew in strength. He married fourteen wives and had twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters.</div><div class="p"> 22The other events of Abijah&#8217;s reign, what he did and what he said, are written in the annotations of the prophet Iddo.</div>
