The Shepherd (S1-E9)

DAY 1 OF 4

Spotless Lamb

At the first Passover, every Israelite household was commanded to choose a spotless lamb. The family was to care for it for several days and then offer it as a sacrifice. It’s hard to imagine the weight of that moment — children watching as the innocent lamb they had tended was killed, its blood brushed onto the doorposts.

To modern ears, the scene feels dark and unsettling. Yet that blood was a sign of mercy. When the Lord passed through Egypt in judgment, He “passed over” every home covered by the lamb’s blood. Inside those homes, the people were safe — sheltered by grace.

This story points to a deeper truth repeated throughout Scripture: “Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” (Hebrews 9:22) Sin brings death, and only a life given can cover it. The sacrifices of the Old Testament were never the ultimate solution — they were shadows pointing forward to the true and perfect Lamb.

Isaiah foresaw Him centuries before: “Like a lamb led to the slaughter, He did not open His mouth.” (Isaiah 53:7) That Lamb is Jesus — the innocent One who chose to lay down His life so that judgment would pass over us.

From the blood on the doorposts in Exodus to the blood-stained cross on Calvary, the message is the same: salvation comes through the Lamb. And on the night before His death, as Jesus celebrated the Passover with His disciples, He gave it a new and eternal meaning — His own body and blood offered for the forgiveness of sins.

Through His sacrifice, we no longer hide behind a door marked with blood, but behind a Savior whose love has covered us completely.
