Biblical Deliverance: The Jesus ModelSample

What are the steps of deliverance? My hope and prayer is that this devotional has really opened your eyes and also encouraged you to be bold for Jesus’ work. We need more deliverance ministers, especially in our current culture. As we continue to read the Bible, it says it is only going to get more difficult as the time of Jesus' return draws near. And I pray He finds us all doing His work. Below are the steps Jesus took to deliver this young boy. This is the Jesus model. One thing we don’t ever read in any of Jesus’ deliverance accounts is that He raised or lifted His voice when performing deliverance. Yes, passion and your desire to see this person free can get in the way but this should not be the norm. What I have learned in performing several deliverances myself is that true authority doesn’t need to raise their voice. We are not putting on a performance. We are partnering with the Holy Spirit to set the captives free. It’s His power and Jesus' authority not ours. So how does Jesus teach us in this scripture to handle this type of deliverance with this unclean spirit? 1. Prayer and Fasting. Now, we know that not every deliverance calls for fasting, however, I say why leave it up to chance? Continue in your spiritual disciplines out of your love for God and devotion to Him. 2. Faith. Faith comes by hearing the Word of God. We must believe in Jesus, the power in His Blood and Name, and have confidence in God's authority in us, not in our own ability. He gave it to us. Also, don’t doubt. When we continue to read and study the Word, we will continue to build our faith muscle to do the greater works He has called us all to do. 3. Ask questions. Is the person habitually living in sin? Do they need to repent, renounce or forgive someone? Is this situation drugs or something else? You probably want to ask the person if they want to be free. This is why we talk to the person if they are of age. We can’t assume everything is an unclean spirit. 4. Rebuke the unclean spirit . To rebuke something is to criticize it. We can say something like, “In the name of Jesus, we rebuke you, you unclean spirit.” We must use our mouths when confronting unclean spirits. 5. Expose the unclean spirit by name. Jesus did not rebuke the boy so we do not rebuke the person we are ministering to as well. However, there are some times we call out the unclean spirit by name to bring deliverance. In this case, it was a deaf and dumb spirit . But there are times where you can encounter a spirit of fear, spirit of infirmity, spirit of suicide or death, etc. As a child of God, you have access to the gifts of the Spirit. Typically, the gift of discerning spirits, word of wisdom and word of knowledge are used in these sessions. God wants the person free more than we do. He is able to endow you with certain gifts to reveal the unclean spirit and bring deliverance in that moment. Just ask the Father for help. It’s a ‘key’ of the Kingdom. ( Please note : Orthodox believers thought you always needed a name to cast out the demonic. Jesus shows us in Mark 1: 21-28 that you did not always have to know the name of the unclean spirit.) 6. Command the unclean spirit to leave in Jesus’ name. Jesus didn’t have to use His name to command the unclean spirit to leave and not return. However, we do. Our authority is in Jesus’ name alone. This is when you say, “In Jesus’ name, Deaf and dumb spirit, I command you, come out of (him/her) and enter (him/her) no more.” Or simply, "Come out in Jesus Name." Remember that all unclean spirits are illegal in the Kingdom of God. You have the authority under heaven to cast out all unclean spirits as a believer. These are the steps of deliverance that we see Jesus teaches us right out of this story. This is a great place to start when performing and walking with someone through deliverance. We also know it is wise to walk with the person after the deliverance so they can maintain their freedom. Just as you have spiritual disciplines yourself we encourage you to share those with that person so they can stay free.
